A coal ship is stuck right in the middle of Nobby's beach! I hope they get it out because that would ruin one great windsurfing/kiting spot.

the Newcastle City Council parking rangers are pissed... it's illegally parked but they can't get out to stick their little note under his windscreen.

Anyone that know's Newcastle's parking cops will identify with that!

Rescuers fight to rescue freighter crew

The Pasha Bulker coal freighter is listing 100 metres off Nobbys Beach, Newcastle. User Submitted
Thousands of people are lining Newcastle's beaches in driving rain and gale-force winds as rescue helicopters attempt to retrieve the Filipino crew of a coal freighter which has run aground in heavy seas.

The 'Pasher Bulker' had 22 crew members on board when it ran aground in wild surf off Nobbys Beach this morning after getting into trouble near the extrance to Newcastle Harbour.

ABC Local Radio's Simone Thurtell says conditions are extreme as the rescue operation begins.

"I can't stress to you how strong the wind is down here on the beach, the sand is whipping and the choppers are certainly going to be buffeted around as they try this rescue operation," she said.

Newcastle Lord Mayor John Tate says he has implemented the city's emergency plan to deal with the crisis.

He says attempts will be made to move the ship out to sea before assistance is given to the crew.

"The process is that the police take charge, and they'll work with the port authorities, no doubt, and council is there to back up and help with traffic control and so forth," he said.

"I can assure the people of Newcastle that the emergency plan for this area is very strong, it's a good plan, it's revised on a regular basis."

Nobbys Surf Club president Dave Edwards says the conditions are quite extreme.

"It reminds me of the 1974 cyclone conditions that we had here when a ship ran aground up here in Stockton Bight, and that ship was called the Signa and that ship stayed there for evermore," he said.

The Newcastle Port Corporation has put all ships on restricted movements due to massive seas and gale force winds.

Sail out there on a Starboard Start and you could rescue the crew yourself.

Couldn't you have stuck all those pictures of that boat in the boating section or kiting instead of cluttering up the windsurf pictures page?
One would have been enough it's just a stuck boat.

he
i'm up here in newcastle, it ain't a nice place to be today, just ended my day with an hour walk through waist deep water and my car floating down the main road. but i did get on the water for a few runs, well 3, 4.2m could not really sheet in. but it's all fun, massive chop. tomorrow looks good it's backing off to something more usable, and we i get to look at the big ass ship on our reef, and if you's where wondering, the nose of the ship is right where we drop in, thats one hell of a wind shadow and there are photo's on ninemsn.com and i will be taking some tomorrow.

would make some good footage for an Australian Storm Chase video...

... it certainly looked as gnarly when I went today as it did in the video...

... and that was only Botany Bay... you'd have to be crazy to sail open ocean.

Yeah donk it was wet and stressful...certainly an amazing day. I wonder how the reef will be after having 40,000 tonnes sitting on it.
