The parallel double concave with side flats looks interesting, just curious why did you choose this and what do you expect this bottom shape to do for the board? I still like looking at that outline!

Fred has machined the grooves for the bottom stringers and cut the PVC. I don't know exactly how he does the stringers so no point asking me

Rider, The parallel concave is a shape that has been around since the 80's, more recently Patrik uses it and Chris used it on his Mistral boards. I have been doing my interpretations of it for a while on my fast gear and it works great. There is a couple of things I like about it. First you have a lot of control over the concaves and can understand how the water will flow along the bottom. Even though i don't build the boards myself I am sure it makes the final finishing more accurate knowing where the edges of the concave are. The second thing is the rails. I like the fact that you can add a bit more V on the side flats and lift the rail mid board a bit higher meaning less chance of it catching in really messy water. Remember this board is more a bump and jump that a DTL wave board.

Fred has milled the rails, I guess it is time to flip and mill the deck.

What I don't understand is what happens to all the foam dust?????
Not a trace of it in any of those pics, and I don't see a big vacuum hose above the cutter.

That machine doesn't munch up anywhere near as much foam as my planner, but my shaping bay looks like a mega snow drift at that stage.

^^^
I did one in my back yard , sucked up most with vacuum on planer , rest dispersed over a 500 km radius

Maybe he is making it in space and just opens the airlock?

Im not sure what your trying to say .
To me this site is about entertainment and sharing information . I think most people can sift the useful info from the waffle and can handle the humor , ( Yanks may not understand ) . If it was too anal it would be boring , ( ever read a US windsurf forum ) ?

I go off grid for a few days and the thread goes to crap. Fred had better send some photos of the board before the flat earthers arrive !

I like the idea of sticking the base on before cutting the board out.
Why use such a small cutting bit when shaping? Wouldn't a bigger bit mean less cuts and smoother base

^^^ Yes, but then the top will require more shaping. Look at a factory CNC with the bullnosed cutter they use.... lots of steps out near the rails

So big cutter at 90 degrees to the cutter but getting smaller the further from 90 you get. I wonder if anybody goes to the trouble of changing. Ha a new invention, automatically width adjusting cutters.

Unlike a volume manufacturer where cutting time is a premium this is a one off board and Fred can take as long as he likes, so a smaller cutter and finer step over gives him a much better finish and less handwork. His machine also does not look like it has the ability to change the tool angle so he needs to go much finer with the step over on the rails. If money was not an issue a full 5 axis machine would be awesome. We have one at work .... who do I bribe?

You could use a larger diameter cutter with rounded edges .

Cutters that follow vectors (like plotter pens) would be better. Surely thats a thing.

Then flat surfaces would be full of grooves.
Yep, I've been gazumped a tilting cutter is a much better idea.

Any one in WA got one of these 3d cnc shaping machines?
Are they easy to build?
I was thinking of making a more primative version like this

You can get super sophisticated machining centres that are true 5 axis and will even change the tools themselves, but big $. Our Tarus clay mills we use to machine the full size cars in clay can move in x,y,z simultaneously and can tilt the head to keep the cutter angle true to surface, so you could do complex cutter paths on these.

Not a ball nose cutter but a flat one with rounded edges .So you can do wide cuts on the flat and smaller steps going around the edge.

Deck machined, will be double sandwich under the pads.
