You've got me all interested in New Cal now. Does it get hectic at Xmas time? I was thiniking of doing a week or 10 days at the end of the year.

You would be better of with 10 days, anyway there's a direct flight every day from Sydney.

Xmas time is awesome, sunny, warm, windy (regular 15/20 knts) and not hectic at all cause all the locals go to the gold coast at that period.....
(surfers paradise is our number one destination).

No jellyfish or sharks or crocs, just the odd sting ray....

As I posted wind has been sooo strong this week, yesterday a kiter went missing, the helicopters had to stop searching for him at night.
Apparently they found his gear but not the bloke.... sad...

Would it be a good place to learn to windsurf? Looks like it would be with the island set up etc.

Definitely would be, only issue is to take a taxi boat to get over there...

There is a great learning spot just 3 minutes from my place called "Magenta", shallow water all the way and off shore wind that brings you back

Bonus : the far end of the bay has a small reef that lifts some decent waves

Extra bonus : kiters forbidden cause it's next to the road and to domestic airport.

Sean, can you possibly recommend a reasonably priced, clean hotel near the windsurfing area?

Cheers

Hairy
We (with better half) stayed at La Promenade right on beach at Anse Vata

7 nights/ 8 days $1500 ea including airfares
Some are cheaper - but extra here was worth it. New with kitchen & laundry etc.
Just walk up 200m to sailing

This is view from room!

and for a video of some sailing and racing
- taken from hotel balcony with a little Canon Legria.
The first island out is about 1 km away.
Second one (in background) with all the kites is about 3.5-4 km.

Hi Pete, did you book your trip through an agent and if so which one.

That's the Magenta wave :

this one was yesterday at Anse vata : 40 knts
(on rare westerlies big swell comes in)

There is a litle wave spot on the left side of Ilot canard (duck island) just outside anse vata, but nothing big.

You need a boat to get to the real big wave spot
(Dumbéa)
Check this guys website www.patricemorin.com/spip.php?rubrique79
(he's the owner of Diabolo windsurf shop, so don't expect to see many rrd's or naish's, but he's darn good with a camera !!!)

Hey Sean,

Hope you don't mind the questions!

Is anyone doing SUP hire there or boat trips out to the surf (pref both!)?

I take it there's no need to book windsurfing gear in advance - just sidle up to the beach when it's windy?

Is september any good?

Cheers,

Jon

@mineral : Apparently the guy managed to swim to shore but didn't bother to tell anyone he was safe....

@Retzy : Don't mind the questions at all, real pleasure to share about my little island !!

sup rentals at Aloha(starboard&cabrinha) and Naish center on Anse Vata beach, and there is a surf camp that does boat trips to the reef from a spot called Ouano (1h drive from noum?a)
http://www.ouanosurf.com/francais/activites.php
But you've got to bring your board
Sept is usually the start of the windy season so late september would be even better.
As for hiring gear @ anse vata you just turn up at the beach and select your gear..

@waiting for wind : let me know when you're coming over, will take care of you !!

Does he need a haircut?

PS - Sean, what name did you come up with for New Cal's first GPSTC team

yep, I thought he would need a haircut, but apparently no !!

Met him (and her ) in the morning and we agreed to meet on the water later that afternoon.

I rigged and went for a few tacks, was wondering if they were already there when I saw a guy to my right throwing a front loop and landing it !!
Haircut !! He then did a few shaka/flaka/waka thingies...

Not sure the rental guy was that pleased but I think Justin and Sabien enjoyed their first day in Nouméa !
Fingers crossed for some more wind this week.

No Sausage, haven't even found a team yet !! Tried my gps (on the phone ) today but barely managed 55 km/h in approx 15 knots...

Magnifique spot to sail. The pix are from 11-ish in the morning before the wind has fully established itself. Lots sailing from lunch onward. Like Australianites, everyone here appears to have based their life around sailing and somehow manage to escape work when there's wind

Yes, except from me who had to watch you take off while I had to go to work... nice front loop once again... on NC8's RRD freestyle board....

yes ! nicely picking up ... poor Haircut you're going to have to spend your whole week sailing, no time for sightseeing, museums, shopping... except at Diabolo.

Should be at the beach around 3.00pm for a little session.

I find haircuts photo's, bloody fascinating. Not sure what he does, but he can grab some great shots.
Recall few years back, he had one of a harbour with all the waterside cranes in the far background. Looked like prehistoric dinosaurs on the skyline.

Haircut, I hope you framed it in a large frame, on a wall some place.
