Other version of the arm wearing ESP32-GPS.

3D printed main case with bars for the flexble 40cm adjustable velcro strap.

After printing, the top of the main case is flushed with sanding paper.

Uses two LED's RED for charging and GREEN for the push button ON-OFF press.

ON-OFF push button is placed underneath the 0.5mm transparant PVC sheet that covers the whole top of the main case.

On the top edges of the main case the 10 mm width flexible transparant high tack Acryl tape is placed first.

nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005005751052700.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.72.21f379d2oJoUfe&gatewayAdapt=glo2nld

Left over edges are cut off with a scissor in a later stage.

After putting in all electronics including the wireless charge board , Beitian Be220 GPS and a 800 mah 1S lipo the top of the adhesive tape is removed (tricky job, I warn you) and the PVC plate is placed. If the plate is larger no problem, you can cut it to size later.

Now take a clamp and press the main case upside down for 6 hours on a flat surface.

After removing the clamp check that the Arcryl tape has no gaps for leaking. The tape should have an even color all around and in the locations where the tape has touched eachother.

Remember you have 2 long pieces and two shorter pieces of tape touching each other. First add the long ones and put the shorter ones with a tiny touch of overlength inbetween. The tape is very sticky and the ends touching each other will bond under pressure to give a non leaking sealing. Cut the short parts of the tape touching in sharp 90 degree angles for best sealing and bonding.

Or you order an one piece 80 x80 mm acrylic tape part and cut the inside out.
nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005005421781950.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.207161d7hZhjUn&mp=1&gatewayAdapt=glo2nld

Now cut the PVC plate at the edges with a wet scissor so the sticky tape will not stick to the blades.

Placed the 3D printed cover (green in the picture) and press fit it over the main case.
The cover has no sealing function.

Ready to go, and use it.

When slided on the upper am during the tacks, speed and other values are easily readable.

About the waterproof state you are wondering?

If your 3D printer is setup correctly with print ing PETG in 100% infill and 6 perimeters the main case will not leak when used in normal conditions.
Remember that 99,9% of the time the unit is above water. If it is submerged a few seconds water will not enter.
The PVC plate works as a membrane under the top cover.
There is room between the top of the Lilygo display and the PVC plate of around 1 mm.
I have not tested the setup in 2 meter deep water as that is totally out of the use case.

As we are not pouring the main case (no problem if you do this if you feel more confortable) you can in case of an electronic problem remove the top cover first as it is press fit. Cut with a sharp knife blade in between the main case top and the PVC the Acrylic tape in two. Remove the acrylic tape on both sides by simple rubbing. Correct the electronic problem and put on new 2 sided sticky acrylic tape as done before. You can use the now precut PVC plate .

Printables page is in preparation.

Enjoy, Paco

Looks like a day of uploading 3D print cases. Finally got around to designing and building the integrated boom mount as inspired by Al. A few users reported the side tabs broke off so this design eliminates them altogether. It also allows the harness lines to be put closer together. It is designed for the BE-180 GPS and a 2000mAHr battery. This design definitely requires filling with epoxy.

Download the files here if you want (Is added to the collection of 3D prints referenced earlier)

Anyone ever tried to reduce the charge current?
With the 2.2K ohm pin 5 to ground of the MPC7838 the charge current is 500mA.
Would charging with 100mA lower the temperature of the wireless charge coil?
I could not find the calculation table in the datasheet of the charge ic.
Or I overlooked it?
If you place a 10 to 20 K ohm in parallel with the 2.2K ohm what would be the charge current?
Longer charging I find no objection if parts stay cooler and the PETG housing does not deform due to the internal heating of the coil.
Or I have to make an aircooled charge stand.

Yes, can verify Jan's tests. That tiny rectangular strip is photosensitive. Covering it with a tiny piece of tape stops all signs of ghosting.

I had to search but found the mentioning of the fading of the display. My design still has the fading problem when the sun appears even when I have a black cover (only the visible part is not covered) over the sensor and a piece of black tape is put directly on top of the mentioned area. I seems like the light is spread through the display surface itself to that area.
The unit is still readable during use for the speed but the 1 HZ fading (screen update) does not make it conform my standards.
Can anyone confirm my findings?

Paco

BTW the acrylic 1mm tape works fine for waterproofing the top with a PVC sheet.
On two versions I used it with no leaking.
Also opening both (I had to put the black tape over the sensitive spot) and reusing the PVC topplate is a 5 minute work.
No leaking at all after this again.

Banana charging latest version.

The fading in bright sunlight is indeed still present with the 213BN screen. In my experience, the B74 screen is much better in bright sunlight. Give it a try !

During my lunch break I got the Eureka moment.

Is it the harsh sunlight giving the fading problem?
Or is it the UV rays from the direct sunlight giving the fading problem?

In the last case I was thinking of covering the transparant top PVC cover with a layer of UV reflection film as used on shopping windows.

What you guys thoughts about that?

Paco

Jan thanks for the link to the webshop.

I have the B74 in a PLA housing which is a bit transparent. And a couple of 213BN (no chip) in not transparent PLA. The B74 fade in direct sunlight, the 213bn not. It depends on the housing not the display.

Thanks for your reply. All my cases are PETG non translucent Mint Green and Black colors. Even in black PETG and the sensitive position covered with black tape I have the fading problem. It looks to me the light is transmitted through the plastic top layer and or PVC plate to the light sensitive spot. But I could be wrong.

I run into another problem.

version 5.83 and 5.84

I press the on/off button and the wifi is found and I connect to the webpage..
I change a value in the configuration and click the reboot button.
Normally after a few seconds the display goes blank and reboots again to search for the wifi.

In two units the display freezes in the last shown wifi connection mode.

Pressing the on/off button does not have any effect. Short or long.
I know now from experience the wifi is on as the battery is drained in a few hours but the screen is static and does not moved left to right pixel wise.

To get the 2 units working again I have to use an USB cable and arduino webota to flash to get wifi connection again.
Then it will connect again every time I power on/off as long as I do not change anything in the configuration.
Downloading files is not a problem.
The changes in the configuration are accepted.
Once I change in the configuration file through wifi any setting and reboot I get the freeze problem back.

Can the reboot sequence get corrupted and keep the wifi enabled and screen frozen?

Am I the only one?

Hi Paco,
Yes, this occurs for me on my latest unit and latest software. It's not a glitch as repeats each time. I think I tried it with older software as well with same result. Freezes on wifi screen display when do config save. You can also restart it wirelessly by entering the root IP address on web browser (i.e. the one on the GPS display) and reflashing software (useful if you have potted unit like me). The work around to stop this freeze happening is to change the config the "old" way using FTP. The config appears to save ok using the web interface for those that don't know the FTP method but be aware you might need to reflash the software if your unit freezes.

Hi Flex, half happy to hear I am not the only one.

Once the display is frozen the unit can not be reached anymore with the IP address shown in the display. That is what I experience.
Since my 2 problem units are not poured but taped I can still open them but this is not very user friendly.

I do not know if the config file is having something to do with it as the behaviour with the same firmware version was not there before.
So there must be a variable changed which cause this. Could it be a timing problem with writing the altered config file and the reboot?
If the reboot was activated later ( I do not know the reboot timing and sequence ) this might cure the problem?

Now I think about it while typing I will use and place my default prefab config file on the SD card to trouble shoot once the units are operational again.

I have two other units in a go pro housing so I can test some more with them so see if I can recreate the problem. I think these units are also on 5.83 version. But they can easily be reflashed wif needed.

Guru Jan, what are your findings on this issue. Do you need me to test somethings to determen the root cause?

Cheers, Paco

I guess the config.txt file is corrupted then, and the wifi settings are not read correctly when reboot. But there should be a second wifi search after 10s, here you use your phone as a hotspot, and set then the default wifi and password. Even with no config.txt file, it should still be possible to connect to this hotspot.
So, from 5.84 sw, the boot sequence is as follow :
Read config.txt
Search for 10s the first wifi,
If not found search for 10s the second wifi (default = ESP_GPS, password = password2)
If not found boot the gps
You can see this sequence on the screen.
There is still another bug in the 5.84, AP mode does not work.
Greetings, Jan.

Hi Jan,

The behaviour is different as you describe
I have the bugged unit beside me running 5.83.
I do not use version 5.84 anymore 5.83 only due to the double wifi search I do not need.
The screen of the unit is frozen with the wifi connection displayed.
If I with my mobile phone search for the ESP-32 connection it is not there.
Pressing the ON/OFF button does not do anything.
Visibly the unit does not reboot and what happens in the background I do not know.

I will make a video this evening about the current state it is in.

I opened the unit and read the config and the config back up file on the SD card.
I added the logSBP option to be switched on and rebooted the unit.
See no difference that cause the lock up or there must be more on the SD card I am not aware of and Windows explorer does not show.

Is this with a b74 (micros usb) or 213bn with chip (micro usb) or 213bn without chip (usb-c) and with leds?

213BN with Micro USB

Oke. That one should behave the same as the b74. The 213bn with usb-c (without the chip and with the leds) behaves differently. But that's not the issue here.

Together with Jan indentified the problem and correct it.
3 units which could be flashed through usb with the correct partition setup are now workingg as intended.
Partition can only be done with flashing true Arduino OTAwebupdater.ino.
After submit config file it reboots instead of display freeze.
Before you pour the unit make sure you have the correct partition tables installed and forced to use 1.06 esp32 library.

Thanks to Jan again for the help.

If your problem is the same, it cannot be corrected with the 5.85 bin file ! You need to have acces to the usb, only then you can flash the correct partition table !!
More info in the corrected build manual, page 6 : : docs.google.com/document/d/1XJD6BV1Xay4nXo0cDuo_IOtxC_f1LyG7DE7X6KGlAB0/edit?usp=sharing
Greetings, Jan.
