I use it on a Motorola Moto X, Manfred has tested it on Samsung S5 and S3 as well. Any Android phone with firmware 4.2.2 and above will run it without any problems. IPhone users are out of luck at the moment.

Interested to see what the satellite count and hdop were for the devices, could you check them Decrepit and post the details. Just interested to see if different phones have similar values.

OK, here's the numbers I got today, actually remembered to "start recording"

realspeed results.
GW52 2/6/15
2s 31.292, (SDOP .27 - .35 HDOP .8 sats 10), 30.558, 30.034,
5x10 28.32
alpha 16.959, 16.473, 16.429
NM 19.543
Hr 14.17
dist 75.34

GT 31
2s 31.257, (SDOP .272, HDOP .8, sats 10), 30.445, 29.882
5x10 29.29
alpha 20.265, 19.788, 19.646
NM 19.57
Hr 13.87
dist 74.15

gps logit
2s 31.364, (HDOP .2 sats 16, 10, 10.), 30.513, 30.271, 29.42,
5x10 29.295
alpha 20.26, 19.939, 19.601
NM 19.569
Hr 13.98
dist 76.190

And here' what the phone itself says.
2s 31,364, 30.635, 30.392, 29.663
5x10 29.312
alpha, 20.325, 19.960, 19.601
NM 19.45
1 Hr 13.476
dist 67.3km ? not sure about this one.

(Interesting that realspeed doesn't like proccessing GW52 alphas.)

The logits tracks were still more jagged than the other two, and the sat number varied more, on the 3 data points used for two second, it went from 16 to 10.
max sats in the file is 23, but it doesn't seem to hold that number for long. I think the signal strength for the Russian sats is much lower than the American ones. Could it be that the russian sats dropping in and out, causes the jaggedness?
It doesn't seem to affect the results though!

Anita,
It works on any android v4.2.2 or newer. I have the logit trial version on my HTC one xl.

Yep, we're just using the Xperia because tricky dicky has them for $49!!!!!

A further benefit of the Xperia series may be that it combines GPS and GLONASS together. I don't know how common that is across Android devices in general.

Well, I'm not convinced it's a benifit here, yesterday, the number of satelites varied considerably from 8 to 23 while sailing.
I have a feeling the Glonass ones are low on the horizon at out latitudes, and so drop in and out fairly quickly.
The Xperia file looks more ragged than the other ones, possibly due to the change in satelite numbers.
There's more work to be done on this, somebody mat get to the bottom of it.

Yesterday, I found another down side to the Xperia, being a Sony it has a "walkman" button on the top edge. I had this against the fold in the Paqua, when I gybed and pumped the sail over, I was rewarded by a blast of music! Fine, but that also dissappeared the screen, getting it back wasn't easy. I had to go back to shore, dry my hands and rearrange the phone in the pack.
To day I'm going to work on making a buffer of some kind to try and stop the random activation of sundry functions taking over the screen.

I found a fix for that:

Disable” Walkman’s App by going to Settings-->Apps-->Downloaded
Tap on the Walkman app and then tap on:
--Disable “Show notifications”
--“Force stop”
--“Clear cache”
--“Clear data”
--“Uninstall Updates”
--“Disable”
At the end the only selection possible becomes “Enable”. If then, you want to Enable it again, you will find Walkman app on "Disabled" list (not on "Downloaded").

Now when you press the "Walkman" button on the top of the phone nothing happens and GPS-Logit continues on its merry way : )

Admittedly, you now don't have the Walkman app available to play music but it's a fix.

OK, you may have a valid point, I'm far from an expert on this, but it seems the "HDOP" values tell a better story.
For the Xperia in my post above I have an HDOP of .2, whereas for the GT31 and GW52 it's .8, with the same number of satelites. I think this means that the Xperia is using different satelites with a better geometric relationship for accuracy. This can only come from the extra Glonass satelites.
And looking at the logit track I see no change when the number of sats changes, up or down. So I guess that blows my theory out of the water.

Gents, this forum discussion and the others of similar vein is fascinating, but I'm finding it hard to keep up.

The question that needs to be answered for IT challenged sailors like me is - Now that the GT31 is almost impossible to purchase, what should we purchase, when as a result of malfunction, we have to replace it with a device that is compliant on GPS Team Challenge?

Will we have an answer to this question before spring?

I'd say yes.

The Canmore has already been OKd for casual GTC use. It doesn't have any info needed for accuracy checking, so if you're claiming some sort of record, it's not really appropriate. And the display is virtually useless on the water.

The GW52 is looking very promising, will it be available by spring? Hopefully.

The logit app is fantastic and has some accuracy data but not as much as the GW52. The trial versions are useablt now, but I don't think it's actually been approved for GTC use yet. Although in my opinion it should be fine.

So if you want my advice get the $49 xperia and load the logit app. If you want to set records all you need is a cheap data logger (that records doppler speed, HDOP and SDOP values) to wear on your head.

Or you can wait for the Thingsee which the GPS Speedsurfing crew are working up.
Supposed to be available July/August?
Watching all of these comments on alternatives, none of them sound to me like a viable replacement for the GT31.

WOOPS!!!!! I've just disabled "Walkman" and downloaded the free "music player" and discovered that the headphone plug is non standard, the standard plug doesn't work in the Xperia, so the water proof head phones I've ordered probably won't either!!!

But it will play music and the walkman button doesn't work.

Possibly cutting the plug off in the pouch and rewiring a sony plug on the end of it will. But the sony plug has an extra connection, I've no idea what this does, it may be neccessary for the thing to work.

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't have any apps on my phone! (I am one of those old fashioned people who only use it as a phone)
I probably need a newer phone to run this logit. So if I get one, I am presuming it needs to be connected to the internet to download this app, but after that, can I run the phone without it being connected to the internet, so that I don't need a phone plan with data for it?

HMM, I think it's silly old fart time again. The plug I used that didn't work was one I'd bought from Jcar to connect my samsung to the HiFi, works fine with the samsung but not the Sony. But Alby gave me second thoughts, so I've found the Samsung earphones and they work in the Sony, also 4 connections. 1 of them I believe is the FM antenna. So with any luck a dedicated phone waterproof pouch and earphones will work.

In fact Alby's just texted me to say his dry pack and phones work great.

Yep, you probably do! You don't need an internet connection as long as you can connect it to a computer that has one. You can download the app on your computer, transfer it to the phone, then install it.
I tested the phone for Rod yesterday, it works fine without a sim card.
I've had another look at the optus pre paid deal, and it looks to me you can have a $10 prepaid account that lasts for 6 months if you don't use the phone more than 10days.

So it makes the $49 phone a very good deal. Music player and emergancy phone as well as a great GPS. There's just the matter of the dry pack with waterproof earphones, and paying for the app.

Got my drypack today from Witworths

www.whitworths.com.au/dripro-waterproof-case-iphone-5
Price $48.95

Clear window is just larger than the phone.
Comes with waterproof earphones with various size ear adaptors which is good for my pixie like ear canals.
Velcro arm band and a lanyard

I don't know how it'll go for pressing button and screen but it looks a quality bit of kit.

Manbra Mob let me know if you want one picked up

Think I'm gunna have to set up the phone as a phone for that price.

Twitching to give it all a go, this looks to me to be a huge step forward.

The takeaway is that the stronger the wind is, the broader you can go for max speed in very strong winds (the limiting factor is that at very broad angles it gets very rough at those angles and wind strength). Conversely, in LIGHTER winds you need to stay at a tighter angle for best speed.

sailquik, You seem to be contradicting your self here...

Yes, thanks Windxtasy. I just saw this typo now when I read back but it's too late to edit it as I have in the quote above.

I suspect a lot of these types of typos are actually caused by the auto spell checker.

Well I thought I'd answered that when I posted the above highlighted section!
If it works fine without a sim card you don't need a phone or internet connection. It works as a standalone GPS just like the GT31.
But at $10 for 6 months why wouldn't you activate it as an emergency phone?

Great post Elmo. I've just checked the website, you can also get Dripro bags to suit other android phones eg Samsung Galaxy. I agree, this looks like a game changer. I really like the idea of having one device that is a GPS - with huge display and audible speed feedback, music, camera, video and emergency call capability. The case looks to be the only possible weak link. We really don't know how it will handle impact associated with a crash at high speed. The following is the blurb from the Whitworth website on its capability.

This waterproof case has been IPX8 certified by the SGS, it is submersible and waterproof in excess of 10 meters (approx. 33 feet) , also protected against sand, dust, dirt and snow.

The following is some info I've found about IP ratings

IP certification is meant for dust, dirt, splash, and dunkable electronics. It is not intended to describe any sort of submergence rating whatsoever.

Dive ratings are much more rigorous, and ideally also take dynamic pressures into account. That's why a "200m" watch is really only meant for swimming or snorkeling at best. The dynamic pressures experienced at those shallow depths doing those activities are similar to a static pressure at 200m.

Up to 10m immersion may not be good enough. Thanks for being the crash test dummy. I look forward to the results of your trials

The first one looks like good specs and a good price, the 2nd one only has GPS support, not A-GPS as well, (not quite sure how much of an advantage that is, but in theory it should improve the accuracy)
But the $49 Xperia + dry pack still works out cheaper.

Did a static test today with the Xperia.
Over 6hrs with about 80% clear sky in front yard, it recorded distance traveled 14m.
Number of sats varies between 4 and 14, the lesser numbers probably when I was leaning over, checking how it was going, these times are also responsible for the most distance.
Max distance across track plot 8m.
HDOP .2 and .4

At nightfall I stopped recording, shifted it to the balcony where it had about 55% sky view then started recording again.
It recorded for another Hr before there was a "low battery warning 1% left please charge.
Distance 13m,
Number of Sats, 5 to 12
Max distance across track plot 5m
HDOP .2 and .4

So with screen locked on and recording it went for about 7hrs.

Tomorrow I'll try it recording but with the screen off, it should result in longer battery life but how much?

No problems. Downloaded and installed. Easy. I opened it and browsed to the internal storage also easily, but could not see any GPS-Logit log files.

I opened the file browser on the phone itself and soon found a folder in the Internal storage called 'GPS-Logit' containing the .SBP files I recorded today. But that folder still does not show up in the Sony Bridge file browser. I have asked Manfred if he knows why and how to fix it.

Andrew - did you have any luck with why this ^ is so? I am also on a Mac and have exactly the same issue. I will use the shuffling files method that Decrepit sorted out but I just wondered if there was an easier way? (cos I am really lazy!)
