finally remembered to wear the xperia on my head. The alpha tracks look much better, 1 or 2 still not quite as nice as the GW52, but most of them are very similar.

Red is xperia blue GW52

I have very grave concerns about using google play to purchase anything. When I try to purchase the app via my Pay Pal account the website insists I log in with google account (G-Mail) and asks me for things that I am uncomfortable giving to Google. Isn't it enough that I can just pay with PayPal?

What are the dangers and is there an alternative?

If there is not an alternative I think this is a huge blocker to using GPS-Logit.

Yes it was interesting as though the speed display was in hundredth of a km/h (up to 100 then in tenths) the speed went 99.0 99.9 100.8 101.7 up and down with no speed readings in-between. So basically it read in 0.9km/h steps which just happens to be 1/2 a knot steps. I wonder if this is caused by lack of decimal places outputted by the phone gps or whether it is software related and perhaps Manfred needs to add some more decimal places and it might take some of the jaggedness out of the alphas.
I use Navigator as well but it only reads whole numbers in speed. I will try to find an app that has better (tenths) speed resolution.

Andrew, Google is just like the NSA but with better computers and no oversight. In WA the transport department was unable to investigate Uber because it's investigators were barred from the site. The WA government has no idea how Google found out who it's investigators were but it should be obvious ...Google tracks everyone/everything. You can not use the gps on your Xperia unless you allow Google to track you.

Do you remember the stink when Google street view cars were logging wi-fi..... Well they promised not to do it again... Haha...they don't need to do it anymore as everyone with an android phone does it for them!! Yet this does not seem to bother the public....

Google is profiling the world so it can sell your secrets to advertisers... whilst paying only 0.6% tax on its Australian generated profits by funnelling them through Singapore (for a 2% commission) to Ireland that does not tax foreign generated profits.

If you tried to do this as an individual the ATO would come down on you like a ton of bricks but multinationals......

Yep. I have just about decided that I will not use this app if I can't do it some other way than using google app store.

When buying through the playstore you have to log in with a google account, and then things get annoying, most apps will require access to your location (understandable for logit), your photos, contacts, call logs and so on...

but no real way that I know off to avoid this....

I just went to the website with this PC, there's a little green button with an "i" in it. Clicked on that to see what it did, and it came up with "this app is compatible with all your devices" so I clicked on that line and it listed both my phones!

BIT of a WORRY indeed. Obviously too late for me now, I'm already in the system.

There is no doubting the price is quite good. I would happily pay that, but I have yet to decide if I want to become Google fodder. Apparently there is no other way.

Create a one-time use gmail account (with fictitious personal details) purely for logit and the phone it's to be used on (presumably not your everyday phone) and voila Google gets no personal information?

Good suggestion. Thanks.
My son also recommended a prepaid visa card from the post office to pay.

You're already on the grid Daffy, Apple have been tracking your phone for years. If you're on Facebook it's game over. Expect a knock on the door from the NSA any day now. Google are the least of your worries.

Manfred has released the commercial version of GPSLogit. It's now up on Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mfuchs.gpslogit&hl=en

If you have a trial version loaded on your phone (expired or otherwise) you need to uninstall that before the new one will load.

A big 'Thank You' to Kean "Roo" for suggesting GPSLogit (and associated hardware to play it on) after a chance encounter at the Hood River Waterfront Park here in the USA on Aug 21! I just got the Alcatel phone, the waterproof headphones and bag should arrive this week from Amazon. I had a chance to do some 'dry land' simulations with GPSLogit and am very impressed. It is great that Manfred is listening to his user community and adding the requested features.

This thread has been a great help in getting at least part way through the 'learning curve' with GPSLogit.

Question: Given that GPSLogit has GPSResults-light built in, what is the additional benefit to using Manfred's full version of GPSResults? I don't mean to hijack the GPSLogit focus of this thread with this question so if the answers are detailed or long, let me know and I'll start a new thread focused on GPSResults - Thank you.

(Hope it is OK to have a non-Aussie interloper as part of this forum )

Welcome aboard Bartontb.
I assure you we are quite honoured to have another USA poster with us!
No Bl@@dy worries mate.
Even the Kiwis and Poms are allowed on here!

This forum is more a big family gathering than an up tight keep on track single focus kind of thing.

I've only just started using GPSresults, but the full version does let you analyse the data more extensively than the light version.
And I find it much easier to use the computer than a smart phone.

Thank you for welcome, decrepit !

Knowing myself, I'm sure I'll be using the full version of GPSResults as well. I'm just in a bit of 'newness overload' right now attempting to understand the new GPS speed tracking toys (and not having used any type of GPS tracking until about a month ago when I purchased the Garmin Forerunner 310XT). I'll still wear the 310XT but was disappointed in the speed response/accuracy so when Kean told me about GPSLogit i HAD to jump on it!

Thanks again,
Barton

Hi Kean, I cheated a little in remembering what you told me. I remembered 'GPSLogit' long enough to write it down when I got the car. I later Googled it and found your equipment recommendation at www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=forum&forum=1&val=83527 . From there it was easy-peasy .

I'll sign up for your team, although 8 months of the year I'll be an 'extended' West Coast team member sailing out of Bonaire . Hopefully I won't pull down your rankings too much. That said, I did manage my PB (since I started using a GPS device in mid-July) according to the Garmin Forerunner 310XT of 30.2 MPH (26.2 knots) on Friday, Aug 21. [edit: original post had my speed as knots, forgot that the Garmin doesn't report in knots... now I have more work to do ]

Now, for my first help question:
But first, some background for the question. I installed GPSLogit on both my Samsung Note 2 phone and the new Alcatel Onetouch Evolve 2 (the one I’ll actually be using when sailing) just for grins. What I immediately noticed was the GPS times were different by exactly one hour. Both phones are configured for automatic network-provided date, time and time zones (note that I did NOT activate the Alcatel so it was acquiring the 'network' info from the WiFi connection). The GPS time on the Note 2 is the same as the ‘phone time’, but the GPS time on the Alcatel is one hour earlier than the ‘phone time’ (which is the correct time). Now to the question: is there a configuration setting somewhere, either in GPSLogit or the phone, that I am missing that would cause the difference between 'GPS time' and phone time? Does your Alcatel show the correct 'GPS time' - meaning it is taking into account the one hour time shift for daylight savings? I would understand that the GPS time might not account for daylight savings if it were not for the fact that it is shown correctly on the Note 2.

Thanks,
Barton

G'day Barton,

I get the same time discrepancy on my Alcatel which isn't activated, not really a problem. Tried a few settings and it doesn't seem to change.

Send an email to GPSTeamchallenge through the website and request to be a member of the West Coast Speedsters in the USA. Doesn't matter if you are away in the winter, lucky bugger!

Regards

Roo

Hi Kean, I tried signing up on GPSTeamchallenge website and kept getting an error on the 'where do you sail' question. Sent them an email so hopefully will get connected soon.

Thanks for the info on the Alcatel - glad to know it isn't user error on my part. Shouldn't be an issue on Bonaire since they don't ever go on daylight savings time .

Hi Kean, have you talked to Andrew (the fellow that introduced me to you) about signing up? He likes to get out early in the day and has been ripping it up the past few times I've watched him sail. He has been talking about switching to kiting - he may need a 'hook' to keep him centered on the 'proper' watersport .

Also, I have registered on the gpsteamchallenge site so am awaiting your approval to join the team. I'm sorry that I'll bring down the team speed averages but maybe at least the team will score some lower points with two people sailing on some days... My gear is more suited to BaFing (back and forthing as you wrote on another site) but as I regain some competency, maybe I'll spring for a speed board and some race sails...

Barton, relax, you can't bring down the team score! Only enhance it, that's the way it's been designed. Originally that was the case, but it was found team captains were discouraging the slower sailors from posting. That wasn't what it was supposed to be about, so it was decided that only the top 2 scores in each division would count.

In a small team that has trouble getting 2 riders on the water at the same time, any extra sailor can lift the scores, because a single poster doesn't count either.

Thanks decrepit.

Once I return to Bonaire and the wind speed picks up (December?) we will see what happens. Bonaire is a great place for speed sailing compared to the Gorge (except when you hide behind the Hood River sand bar like Roo sometimes does ). Lac Bay on Bonaire has relatively flat water and not nearly the wind speed difference between lulls and gusts compared to what I've experienced this summer at the Gorge. I'm looking forward to returning to Bonaire with my GPS tracking toys

Thanks Roo.

Planning on making the trip from Corvallis to Hood River this Friday evening - just hoping the waterproof pack arrives in time (it is somewhere between Colorado and Corvallis as I write this). I have all the other gear ready and waiting...

For the Gorge, my 'speed' board is presently a 2014 JP Magic Ride Pro 104L which is surprisingly fast for a board that also jibes . My larger sails are all 2014 Sailworks Retros (5.5, 6.5, 7.5). For higher winds I'm riding a 2015 JP Freestyle Wave Pro 77 L and using 2014 Naish Chopper sails (sizes XS, S, M, L) - love the sizing nomenclature ...

On Bonaire my gear is mostly 20 year old Gorge gear except for a 2014 JP Magic Ride 118 L and Sailworks Retros (5.5, 6.5, 7.5). Funny thing is I'm still partial to my 20 year old Sailworks Race sails...

I compared the size of the SBN files for the Xperia and the GT-31 for the same sailing session. The GT-31 has 4 to 5 times the data. I wonder if this has something to do with the inaccuracy of the Xperia compared to the GT-31

Comments on this forum seem to be relayed to Manfred, so:

It would be very useful if there was a screen lock for logit. Often the touch screen is activated inadvertently (especially when falling in the water) and the function is changed (most often to countdown mode). The GT 31 lock button is really useful to prevent inadvertent changing of functions

Windxtasy,

I've emailed Manfred a number of times at info@gps-speed.com and he has always responded quickly. He even included one suggestion in the App.

The .sbp file is a bit more compressed than the .sbn format. If you wipe the data logger before a session, then do a "save to card" after the session, you'll get an sbp file on the card, if you compare this to the logit file, I wouldn't expect to see a lot of difference. As the logit doesn't record the accuracy data it will probably be a bit smaller.

I think the main problem with the Xperia is it's 0.486Kt resolution and poor satellite sensitivity.
