This brings to mind a soccer field I saw a few days ago in the town I'm currently working in. It is a hilly town, and the school soccer field has about a 10 degree pitch end to end.

At this moment if you count Great Britains PB's ( Extras)
in their scoring sessions they have 10 PB's ( Extras ) 50 bonus points.
Australia is about 2 Pb's. 10 Bonus points!

So quick maths would put you Great Britain in the front now in series one.
But I'm only The Umpire!
Check the score board tomorrow and I will add the extras.
Distance is like the runs in cricket.

Not so ... You can stand at the crease and wip out six after six, banging lots of runs on, or you can run your arse off back and forth, hitting singles all the time.

If distance is like the runs in cricket, discounting basically all the other disciplines, this is then reduced to a marathon , or endurance test , not speedsailing,

Dang! There I was thinking I'd give the poms a sporting chance and ZANG they have to bring it up here. Ah well I suppose I'm going to have to crack the 300 k mark sooner or later

Nah!!! i think what OPH is saying is quite relevant at the end of the day which will be coming earlier by a dramatic amount soon (for the UK). This has to be looked into basically i think that distance should be discontinued for the ashes, or can we (The Poms) call bad light thus restricting the hours for Aussie sailors which would need all data to be analysed to cut out early am and late pm times? Which would in all honesty cancel out any top speeds, alphas, nm's etc. now to be fair would anyone want that?

Cheers all Swagger.....

That's why we put the Tasmanians in for series 1 - their winter approx = your summer

I like your competitive instincts.

It's not sheep stations or palaces we're fighting over.......
......it's even bigger than that...

IT'S THE ASHES

hmmm... ok mate thanks for the moral support against this heathen.

Nebz and Hardz have gone to great lengths with the GTC scoring in forming a relatively flat playing field, and it works like a well oiled machine.

If it aint broke don't fix it. In order to acheive, rather maintain the level playing surface, preferably "PiT Smooth" just continue with the GTC scoring system, which gives equal merit to all disciplines.

Surely our summer isn't that bad ... is it? I thought we were more like a QLD Winter

The scores (progressive, stumps, day 2) are up and looking very even on a steady wicket.

See Scoreboard topic.

All PB's count for extras for ALL members of ALL competing teams in their competing month.
So, your PB counts towards scoring - more people involved & contributing, even if you are not the fastest/fittest

There may be a point regarding (discarding) distance, but at this stage we will stick with an accumulative scoring system.

1. It distinguishes the WS 'Ashes Series' from the 'GPS Team Challenge' - which we do NOT want to compete with nor take away from its status/impact. ie it is based on same data but scored differently

2. It is more like a cricket score type system.

3. We keep PB bonus (Extras), again as a point of distinction but also it allows everyone on a team to contribute to points. If a new sailor then that is more people involved in the GPS TC & that can't be bad.

Good winds everyone

I've also had an idea for a team event during Weymouth Speed Week:

Yo, cos after all, the Ashes is a Test cricket series, not limited overs, and a marathon innings is part of the deal.
If someone wants to be a Boycott and bat/sail until dark , then more power to them.

www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=forum&forum=1&val=23546

It struck me that it might be fun to run a team competition during WSW - Portland Pirates, Team East, WK Speed Warriors, St John's Mud Sharks, Irish Speed Kings, etc.

We could simply look at GPSTC but I think that it would be good to do something where we can see the results for individual days and for the week as a whole. My thinking is that we can utilise the results shown on the "ranking of the day" page(s) of GPSSS - 2 sec (peak), 10 sec (run), 5 x 10 sec (avg), 500m.

Rather than a "best 2" system it would be nice if everyones result counted towards their team. It would be much more of a team thing that way as everyone will make a difference and winning won't be due to the best 2 sailors alone!

I like your idea Michael. Involving all team members has to be good.

GO FOR IT.

Great stories and photos. After driving through snow and having to cross swollen rivers to go sailing, can the poms complain too much about their winter?

Allegations are flying that the FNQ mob (in partic one Firie) took a dive, despite having good wind , just to give the Poms a start in the series

Vehement denials that Dr Cam did not administer "Slow-down Syrup" commonly found in the town of Bundaberg & surrounds

The Umpire is investigating...........

C'mon Aussies

Looking forward to the post test analysis Risky , a table for leading scorers in each division would be great for both Eng and Aus, so that we can all acknowledge the key players for each test.

keep up the entertaining good work there matey!

As a Perth Southsider, I would like to thank the Tassie Speed Seekers, FNQ Mob, and the Mid-North Coast Marauders for having a bit of a bat for us! Being stuck in windless Perth it has felt like we were stranded at the non-strikers end, without getting off the mark. Hopefully the Perth teams in the subsequent Series get a good innings.

Hey Sandy, it's all about joining in and having a go - wind permitting

It's been a bit of a wind-drought in most parts of Oz this winter

As the scores will show - not just the big numbers, but just as importantly, PB's make a significant contribution.

"Swan River Mob" are next up to bat for WA in Team Oz!

Mr. Umpire: Thought I should report this.

Had a knock on the door late last night. Someone with a "sub-continental voice". Offered me an all expenses paid holiday to Central Australia for the month.

Anyone else had a similar offer?
