Hi Lyndon,
great looking board. I've sup sailed in the surf quite a lot; and tried a bunch of different shapes:
Starboard 10'5 drive - no footstraps
Starboard 9'1 pro - with footstraps
Fanatic 8'5 prowave - had footstraps put in
Starboard 9'8 fish - with footstraps
Starboard 11'2 with footstraps.

I think you'll be fine on that board - you might try a more wave oriented fin for turning.
Great pick up. Well done!

Just got this 2008 pacifico wave. At 170 liters Im hoping it will make a good heavy guys wave board, especially as local wind is inconsistent. I tried it out and it seems to plane much better than most SUP boards, mainly due to less tail rocker than contemporary SUPs. It still has a narrow tail and very thin rails. I think it will turn well, but I will need more wind or a wave to try that out properly.

I have a 10ft exocet X long board but its only 145 liters. Its a great board and the step tail really works. Ideally Id love an 11 ft x long-board but I cant find one. Have also thought about a Kona long-board, but I think it may be too big for the waves. There is the bic Jungle as well but I believe its heavier, and online most people say it doesn't plane well despite its straps.
The pacifico wave looks to have come from a time capsule, its in such great shape.

In other news I'm planning to pressurize my tiga race with a vacuum exhaust, and put soapy water over it, so I can look for bubbles. I suspect its deep inside the CB case thats leaking. At the moment a 4 hrs sailing session might sink the Tiga race. 1 hr takes on about 7 litres of water.

That's a nice looking board, a classic shape and style and should be great in the surf Lyndon.

Hi Guys,
I appreciate the feedback on the pacifico. Ill keep you updated.
This saturday looks great (NE) BUT ive got a conference in Sydney
But I am hoping to pick up a new D2 when down there.
Fingers crossed and holding my breath, but Ill let you all know if it works out.

Also M.... aka Barbarian
how did you find the SUP boards planed ?
also I never new starboard put straps on an 11ft 2. Was that a windsup rather than a sup with a windsurfer fitting.
Ive found the avanti 11ft2 36 wide actually planes ok , but with no straps you fly off the board when you get air going out. Ive also tried the 8ft 10 widepoint 32 wide with 3 straps, but it really couldnt plane (avanti was better) but it was quite nice riding waves.

Also M ... there is a windsurfer one design race day coming to gosford I believe in september. Perhaps Al or Pete can post more details.

regards Lyndon

Hi L,
(I like the cloak and daggerboard stuff).
I miss typed, sorry. the 11'2 has no footstraps. that was my mistake. All were SUPs with windsurf fittings. The 9'1 and 11'2 actually planed ok, but not early. I still own the 11'2 and did 24kts at the fingal bay speed strip in a heavy noreaster last year. Once up and riding and on flat water they are good fun, but i should have been on my 90litre board... would have been much faster.

The boards bigger than 9'8 tend to trip in the bottom turn and can't handle an aggressive cutback. the shorter boards don't plane as well, but carve on the wave better. I rarely use the sups unless the waves are small and the wind light. If the waves are good and the wind light i'll surf them.

I am keen to come along to the WOD day. Did I see a photo of you with a new WOD LT. awesome!
chat soon

Hi Everyone

I spoke to Al Haynes, he is keen on the Thailand Race at $400 plus insurance, the $400 is proposed to cover a loan LT, transfers and accommodation. You bring your own harness lines and harness. Of course you need to pay airfares estimated around $600.

See below for a facebook extract on the race, it appears there are 17 Aussies already keen to go. Al is keen, I am thinking about it we have until 9pm tonight.

Let me know if any other Gosford Sailors are keen.

Hi Guys,
This article appeared in free sail in 1989.

Thanks to PD (not JDs Brother but the other PD) I have access to some amazing old windsurf mags.
I can post more topical stuff if you enjoy. Also do you want me to make it page at a time to make it easier to read. Mostly double pages show the pictures better.

Thanks for those articles on One Designs Lyndon - good stuff. The summer is gonna be big for our sport!

Enjoyed a good afternoon sailing at Gosford yesterday.

Sorry I missed to photography session!

Picked up up a few donated old original wallys at Toronto on the way down, rescued from the garbage tip. Still have one available for anyone who would like to get back into the sport for under $50. Bargain! Phone Al on 0438336495.

only three sailboarders raced today (two phantoms and a Windsurfer LT) with several regulars having other commitments. Lyndon was there early on his Phantom but had to leave before racing.

The race
Challenging wind and a big field of sailing craft. John Doolan took out first place in Sailboards with Peter Smits following - both started the race with 8.5 techno sails and commented how underpowered they were. I was well behind on an LT Windsurfer sporting the standard 5.7m sail and thinking this is gonna take some time to complete. However the 'nor westerly certainly came in during the race and we were all hanging on and full on planing for the greater portion of racing and return to the club. Shortly after the wind dropped back to nil!

A few of us had our fair share of spills and thrills and several boats capsized due to the ferocity of some tricky shifts and very strong gusts of well over 25 knots at times.

looking forward to more consistent nor Easter's or southerlies!

We are hoping a few more regulars come out and have a go. You don't need to be an experienced sailor or racer - I'm far from experienced in racing as I've only raced a few dozen times in 40 years!

Between us we have spare gear available for those who want to try before buying.

Come along to Gosford Sailing club next weekend and get in some practice for the Long Weekend regatta
2 days of sailing for Raceboard Class and Windsurfer Class 29, 30th September.

check out details on the News and Events tab on Seabreeze, Windsurfing NSW WEBSITE or Windsurfer Class Association of Australia and NSW Facebook pages.

cheers, Al

When you next reflect on board prices, we are now getting exotic material boards probably cheaper in inflation adjusted dollars than we used to get the old boards. F2 lightening race $2500 in 1989! And One design windsurfer $799. That was in the days when the average house was about 80,000 locally anyway. If boards went up like houses you would pay well over 25000 for a race board now.
Hey Paul Note astra surf eliminator $1965 and 250litres .

Great regatta guys - really well done! It was a great turnout of Raceboards and hopefully later we can get more Windsurfers. Thanks for your hard work.

By the way, I managed to leave a new LT mastbase on the grass, I think - did anyone find one? Yes, I am a dope.

After a great regatta last weekend we're back to club racing tomorrow at Gosford, beefier next weekends 2nd Raceboard and Windsurfer Class regatta at DAC (Dobroyd Aquatic Club).

I'm still waiting for tomorrow's schedule from the club, but I expect the start for Sailboards will be between 2pm-2:30pm. (closer to 2:30pm as we are usually the last start in the fleet.

The forecast is for another solid 25+ knot southerly, so racing may be abandoned should the club deem so for safety reasons. Should racing be abandoned we'll go for a social sail anyway.

Regardless I'll be at the club from around midday and look forward to seeing some new sailors to our group after their enquiries last weekend.

Just an added note: (Im not going to DAC racing)
I intend to be at the sailing club from around 130/2pm to about 4:30 Saturday 13th oct
Im bringing some beginner gear as well as a big floaty paddle board.
Anyone who struggles to get back to shore will be assisted by swapping onto the paddle board, and I will sail the gear in.
I most likely will have the fully inflated sail which is suited to very first windsurf attempts.

If no one turns up I will be practicing with my foil.
Just wait near the beginner board and I will check in frequently.

It's Friday again, which means it's almost time to windsurf again :)

Were back racing at Gosford again tomorrow and with daylight savings in play, start times have probably changed since my last post.

The forecsst is looking great for a day out foiling, but everyone is welcome on any board and sail combination (Raceboard, Windsurfer, Formula, Division II, Foils or Freeride). Racing isn't mandatory, so if you'd just like to come for a sail with us, don't hesitate to come down to Gosford Sailing Club any Saturday.

I'm aiming to be at the club by midday. If we have any newcomers needing lessons or a loan board, please post a comment here (please include your skill level - Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced and what time we should expect to see you) so we can ensure we have the necessary gear for you.

I'll post the club racing schedule once they email it through later today. If you plan on Racing, please be prepared for a start of approx 1:30pm though.

That was Quite a special day for me. Started out great meeting a new recruit (Emmanuel) who shows much promise. Always great to see someone take to windsurfing. Gosh its so much better to start with a wide board and an inflatable sail at least for that first session of getting the feel for how it all works. (hope to see you again soon) More recruits welcome.

Next we sailed out into the bay to be met by the wind dropping to zero and heat and humidity that was remarkable. A fleet of dinghies skiffs cats and yachts and us, all completely becalmed and about a half of the participants either swimming or hanging in the water. It was great to have a chat. Pete was in good form with practical joke comments. I think we were all wondering a bit how we would get back.

Then over the megaphone the start boat announced (something Ive never heard before, besides with wind I dont think it would be heard) follow me , new course.

I have no idea how they knew what was coming but we took about 15 minutes to drift 300m to a new start.

Then the wind turned on and Kept building from the NE.

Given the storm clouds forming I thought it would disappear in minutes, but it held in until around 5 or 530.

Im allowed a closer top mark as a handicap, but I was storming up wind , at times felt like was was gaining, and otherwise racing a skiff, and I lost sight of my top mark , so ended up doing the same mark as the leaders, silly me.

I was sailing the Exocet RSD2 which is such a nice board up wind. Its good down wind if the wind is light. But it has a horrible gap down wind where its too light to really reach properly, but its starting to plane with the track forward. In that mode it steers wildly left and right as the displacement part of the hull engages chop. and then it spears through the back or chop. Thats what it was like on the second down wind.
Back upwind it was a dream again, except the finish line seemed very narrow and with so many craft trying to finish at such speed that it was really scary and I needed a couple of goes at it avoiding crashes.

After the end the wind picked up further and we all enjoyed some nice free reaching , with a building storm on our heels.

Massive lightning display to end it all off.

Thanks again to Pete and John and Emmanuel for a great day.

As you say it was great to see Emmanuel sailing so well on just his first day with us. No doubt if he continues with that progress he'll sailing with the rest of us in no time!

The breeze after the race provided really great freeridingb what a pity I'd left my GPS in the car :(

Thanks Lyndon, Pete and Emmanuel for a great day yet again.
