Predicted 20 to 30 knot SW winds. Let's see what happens between now and then. If its windy I'll be heading to Canton Beach again. Hopefully there will be video and photos taken too. I have a new camera head for my tripod which should give smoother panning and hopefully better quality video. I'm excited!

I wish I could red thumb myself. Those 20 to 30 knot winds on Saturday have gone. Who knows though? They might return. Perhaps its time to check some synoptic charts like the good old days to work out the wind, rather than being lazy and checking the arrows.

I tried out the new tripod camera head. Its pretty good. However for $35 its not the best. It will be interesting to see how it compares. Plus recently I bought a Flymount so hopefully the GoPro can be used at a few different angles.

I'm after some advice. I've got a window of a just few hours on friday morning to get out. Based at Wangi, Lake Macquarie. Mostly sailed NE so not sure of where works best when it's got south or west in it.

1. Wangi caravan park
2. Dobell Park, south side of Wangi
3. Coal Pt
4. Marmong

Any comments on pro's and con's would be welcome - not just for friday, but for the rest of winter too.

thanks

Marmong is good in a straight southerly but if there is much west it gets a wind shadow.

Wangi caravan park will be totally sheltered so no good.

Coal Point would be OK.

A lot of the morriset based guys sail at Sunshine - the park right out on the tip. Works well in SW.

Valentine is good but maybe a bit too far to drive from Wangi.

Not sure about Dobell park.

cheers
james

Valentine , maybe Dobell Park although it always looks gustier than Valentine. Never sailed there but often go past as family out there.
Coal would prob be ok although if anything goes wrong it's a long swim!
Anything with much west in it is gusty on the lake. For a full on WNW / W Squids in Belmont bay is good but it's shallow so you have to walk out to the end of the point and be careful how close in you come. Also heaps of Kites but they stay in the flat shallows. It gets the most consistent wind in the W / WNW angle no good in a SW.

dobel is good had many sails there but not for some time now. If it has to much west in it you will have a small wind shadow.
I will be at Cantong hopfully doing some speed sailing.

I might try canton but is it absolutely necessary to use a weedie.maybe I can mow it down with a pointer.

You don't have to use a weed fin but your sailing might end up doing this a lot.

I sailed at Dobell Park many years ago in a SW wind. From memory the wind swell was quite large which was good for a wavesailor.

I'm heading to Canton today.. By the look of the forecast I may have to get there earlier as once it hits 28 - 30kts + I need about a 1m sail..( smallest decent one is 3.8m or a twitchy 90's 3.2m ..[}:)])
Days like this I wish I weighed 100kgs instead of 64kgs..
Bet you 100kg guys are frothing at the mouth..

Just that the 100kg guys I know love 30kts + so they can use their smaller gear..I was exaggerating ok maybe 85kgs +.. I just hate that heavier people love the 30kts + and for me I'm like a leaf and get blown off the water..I'll fill my camel back up that will add 2kgs....
I must be getting old.. I used to love 30kts + too.. but I was a lot younger & fitter then and could hang on better.

30-35kts+ to them is like 20kts to me ..comfortable fun sailing with a 4m or 5m sail..

Today will be interesting. Look at the colour of the arrows. Do they indicate how some people are feeling?
