Another stealthy visit to the pond. With the closing off of the old bar there is now a fairly large flat water area at the northern end of the passage. For those that remember the speed run back in the old days the gybes near the board walk in an easterly were loads of fun.

My prediction is the northern end will become epic again in an easterly.

Anyways. Not much wind. Where was everyone???

The snapper were biting.!

In real terms, how often is it ever a true Easterly of any decent strength? ... some 8kn easterlies and the once-per-year 15kn ?

I have been sailing quite a bit at the new bar/entrance, in the southerly / south-easterlies. There is a knee-deep bank forming outside of the bar - this is separate from the northern-Bribie-Island-sandbank (on the south side of the bar). This outside-bank is results in a quite smooth section between it and Bribie Island, with waves forming at the north end of the entrance.

I haven't sailed every beach on the East Coast, so take this statement with a grain of salt -> it is probably one of the best gumby-tack jumping locations on the East Coast ! .... maybe... I just know that mast-high jumps are common. Its not really a waveriding break.

I have mostly sailed at low-tide - there isn't too much river-current. There is almost no ocean-sweep at low tide. I dont have enough experience with high-tide currents; high tide does bring more ocean water across the sandbars, making it quite choppy/rough.

Water depth at the new bar, is quite shallow (obviously at low tide) -> in a lot of places it currently is shoulder/head deep, allowing you to stand up or at least touch-bottom. If sailing there, do be aware of the shallow sandbars.

And trees - there are a couple - dont hit them.

yeah you are right. good easterlies are few and far between.. usually needs a cyclone. back in the early 90's there were less trees and building at the northern end so the wind was better. the trees seem to be reducing on the southern side of the old bar. maybe we'll get back to a bigger area with less wind disturbance in time.

i've sailed the new bar area a few times on higher tides and didn't find it much fun either. the waves get very messy. low-mid and incoming seems better and more organised. although, since the bar got wider i've not sailed there at all as the trees have put me off a little. kinda worried about getting skewered.

have you managed to try it in a SW wind to see what it's like for wave riding. the old bar was small fun in sw.

last weekend i went to ann street at low tide for float and ride.... low tide seems to be pretty good on the northern side of the old wreck. unfortunately the wind didn't happen so i surfed my sup only. i'm keen to try it in a southerly at low tide.

The water looks clean . I wonder if the area will pond and get stagnant or does water still get over on high tide and flush out the other end ?

I was there two days ago during the low tide. Plenty of sandbanks around, however I have noticed that during some parts of the year it appears that it is all sand and no water! I don't think that the water will become stagnant, the tides still move in and out. The water was surprisingly clear for low tide.

Its pristine at the moment. Kinda wish i lived local again. The bribie breakthrough just keeps giving. Gotta be the best spot by a fair distance on the east coast if you want a mix of water with good wind.

Was out yesterday dredging around near the new bar. There is a lot more water flowing into the northern area from the new bar. Things keep changing

Today would have to be the most drastic I've seen the old bar and GB. Sweet FA water. I might be resorting to the old military jetty and the channel out to the new entrance

Could there be problems for the Golden Beachers or Pelican Waters people on a nasty easterly on high tide ?

Only those that live on Bribie Island will feel the full effects of it

Am thinking the area just south of the navy cadets is going to struggle during the next cyclone event. Last big storm waves were lapping the road..

It's altered our weather pattern. We've had no wind for ages.

Ok, yep shallow there.

my typ launch is just south of prawn man. 32cm fin at low just gets across the bank. So not going down to Gemini.

pity we don't get more true southerlies. Is a great angle across to the other side.

Did a couple of very light wind runs yesterday to do depth checks where I normally do SE runs. Used a 37 cm fin. Tide was about 1/2 tide. I'll do a map up soon to show the sketchy areas. I was hoping blueys photography drone pics could show the sand banks - I'll try to find some pics. It's changing all the time with depths though

latest aerials

not really many ridable waves inside the bar now. waves seem to come from all directions. the outside bank has ridable waves as does the northern end of bribie but elsewhere is very messy.

one big change is the northern opening from the northern edge of the new bar into to the traditional sailing area has gotten bigger. i'm hoping that in a big SE/S swell the waves might roll through that new opening.

From the latest images (thanks Gestalt) it appears as though the old sailing spot is now a pond with no sailing access to open water via the new bar
Is this correct or am I seeing it wrong ?
Cheers TK

It still changes ALL the time, right now from GB you can see straight out through the opening pictured above. But I doubt the wind would ever be at an angle you can sail through there..... possibly NE'er

The areas in blue are particularly nasty! They look like you can sail over them but they bite!
