Just a little info, got my new HD GoPro but it's only recording a minute or so at a time and most of these files are corrupted, the best I got was a 1.6Gb file on the lowest setting but it was corrupted anyway. Not happy Jan
From what I'm now reading on non official GoPro sites is that the new camera's are picky with what card you use, all GoPro recommend is brand name class 4 SDHC. The card I have is a 16Gb Adata turbo class 6 which has great reviews so ferked if I know
I have sent support an email and now wait for what they say.
I have read they will put out a card compatibility list so I'd hold off jumping in at this stage till they have it sorted.
If you have a HD GoPro and no problems let the rest of us know what brand and class card you are using as the cards are not cheap
Oh yeh, the video I have been able to see are very good indeed.
Another drama for me, is my VideoStudio 12 which does HiDeff wont reconise the GoPro Mpeg4 files Neither does Moviemaker. My mates Adobe Premmier does but that's way too expensive and complicated for me
Cheers Bob.
i got a patriot class 4 16gb card, was $40, works fine.
i also tested a 2+ year old 1gb kingston card, also worked fine.
also on movie editors, i use sony vegas, works great, but you need to watch ur file sizes. the gopro HD will let you record a single massive file, but i have found that any file larger then 2gb tends to crash my movie editor.
what player are you using to view your gopro files? how do you know the files are corrupt? I suggest trying VLC.
aaah yes - my favourite bugbear - the wonders of mpeg 4 recording formats - a real headache unless you are running a pro edit set up... i have written many a post about this topic..
and dont try editing it in its native format - only pain and heartache lies there..even if you are on the the world's gruntiest computer - the very technology that get such amazing images down in such small file sizes makes editing those files INCREDIBLY processor intensive.
but if you can transcode to something like DVCPROHD , Apple pro res you will be fine - but not many crew out there have the hardware / software (which lets you transcode to those codecs) set up to do that
the bottom line is: dont expect to be gathering and editing images off these cameras easilyunless you have a good edit system- and some basic knowledge on codecs and compression.
The pictures from the camera look great though!
Thanks Swoosh, I might chase up a Patriot card, I might also look into SanDisc as I read they're ok but not sure which one. Windows Media Player wont play any but Nero Showtime will play some but for the others it say file is no good or something like that.
You're right Reflex, I have read many a time your thoughts but after using a borrowed standard GoPro I got all excited and on went the pumpkin, just didn't think it through I'm just an average Joe who has been editing family home movies for years, I can just imagine the dramas some others are going to have
Might be a cheap GoPro on Buy & Sell soon
firiebob i suggest you try viewing the files using VLC first. www.videolan.org/
It is only a 17mb download and will pretty much play anything you throw at it. It may be a codec issue with your computer rather then a camera problem.
Reflex, i've not had any issues editing or viewing the files from the gopro. thou obviously keeping the clip lengths a bit lower is a good idea, cause my computer is 3 almost 4 years old. I've never edited video before and I was able to get a video edited and rendered in less then 2 hours.
Swoosh - glad to hear your success - you are one of the lucky ones!
keep in mind that Basic editing vs doing any grading / color correction / speed retiming / adding filters to footage - anything involving a render - are 2 very different things.
Answer back from GoPro....
We originally recommend name brand SD cards with a class 4 rating or higher, but have recently come to learn that even some name brand cards such as the Sandisk 32GB, are having compatibility issues with the HD HERO camera.
We are currently working on doing a full listing of recommended (and not recommended) cards. We are researching further to determine why some cards are not adhering to the spec to which our SD card host adapter conforms. If it turns out it is an issue on our end, we will be exploring different avenues to remedy the situation. For what it's worth, internally we use Kingston or Patriot brand cards: 16GB, Class 4 without issue, so can safely recommend those.
Please do try out one of the Kingston or Patriot brand cards, and hopefully the video recording will work fine.
We are so very sorry for the inconvenience and please let us know how it goes.
Many thanks,
GoPro Support

I hope that info helps someone, as for me that's the joys of jumping in quick, at least I now know what card to get
Swoosh you did well with the Patriot
I use an 8GB Panasonic card I bought at JB also without troubles. Did you try 'formatting' the card in windows using another device, say a card reader; I have heard this can fix issues. Worth a shot.
@Reflex I also haven't found any issues editing in Mp4, however I'm not a film maker so it's more cut n shut add a fade here text there etc. Colour correction and filters to me seem like something best left to the professionals :D
I have the same problem, the best I have got so far is one corrupt 256mb file, haven't managed to open it yet. not cool. I am using an OLIN SDHC class S 4gb...so don't buy one of those.
Thanks for the info guys, I'll go for a 16Gb Kingston and see how that goes, will let you know of course.
As advised I reformatted the Adata card several times with the computer with no luck.
Cheers Bob.
Ha Snags that's why I haven't done anything yet, I just lost interest
But it will be a good toy eventually
Hey Folks, just got the Go Pro HD hero, and big problems with SD cards too. Used a 16 gig Lexar 4 speed card which would automatically stop recording after about 3 minutes, then bought a Silicon Power 32 gig 6 speed card from Harvey Norm - didn't work at all, couldn't get to to mount to PC or Mac. Called the importer in WA (very helpful guy called Steve) hey suggested that I use ONLY Sandisk as they are the only brand that has a 'shock rating'. Returned my faulty Silicon Power one to HN and got a Sandisk which I will try tomorrow - i'll let you know how i go.
Can't seem to upload HD to You Tube - anyone know how to do this?
I got my go pro the other day and used my card from my other camera which is a scan disk ultra ll class 4 16gb and it works fine. It will record for as long as the battery last making movie files just under 4gb each which is around 42mins a clip on the highest setting r5. Also i use Gom player to view the files with no problems good luck hope you all get it sorted.
Interesting, not heard of the Gom player, but looks good:
www.gomlab.com/index.gom
I was using Apple Quicktime (also free), but it's jerky and slow...
To play .mp4 in Windows Media Player, you may need the latest MP4 coded, and will need to manually download if you have auto-fetch codecs turned off:
www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/codecdownload.aspx
Amazing smooth playback.
have been playing with a demo gopro - the 720p picture looks a lot sweeter than the 1080p for some reason. 1080 seems to have some macroblocking in the shadows, - still pretty sweet though.
Which is cool as i really like 720p as a hi def format. Especially the slo mo 60fps option (you have to conform it to tell your editor to play it back at 25fps)
These units have an amazing picture for the price - and the form factor is handy.i am going to do some mounts up at lanno over the next few days to see how they go in a wet and salty environment.
Hi Reflex,
Kato and I have been working on a few mounts for the new HD. Mainly for speed ssailing but they certainly adapt to waves as well.
The mast tip mount looks great- it sits right on the tip and extends out about 100 mm. That allows you to look down the leech.
Rumour has it that Spotty and Matt have packed one of these mounts away on their road trip to WA and are gonna bring it out to capture their attempt at the Ledge to Lancelin!
mick
For those of you keen to see some windsurf footage from this camera - i Did some more wizards shooting at Lanno - playing with some camera mounts.
here is a link to a little test movie made with the Go PRO HD.
Ty, Ben Severne and myself star in this one.http://exposureroom.com/e3724b8add7340d4b7fea22144688030/
No problems with my GoPro HD, I use a Scandisk 16 GB class2 card at the moment and seems to be working all right. But I do usually only record for short periods at once.
Here's a sample of my first try out.
I just got a Kingston class 4 16Gb, yeh I know but I lost interest and no wind here anyway, I can confirm it works with no problems. I have only sat it outside and left on but it records till I turn it off, a couple of hours. If you get a HD GoPro get a card that someone here has had luck with or wait till GoPro have their own list
Now I just have to find a new editing program because my Videostudio X2 will not open the GoPro MPEG4 file even though VS is suppose to support MPEG4 ? Windows Movie Maker in Vista wont either. I might start a new topic
Great quality videos Reflex & Eazy, thanks for sharing
Ive got the HD version also.
The supplier shipped with a free 4Gb card 'Maxflash' but before the camera arrived they sent an email that the card was not up to spec and they would be sending me a new card... micro SD and adaptor (not yet arrived)
I have had previous experiance with Helmet cameras and solid state recorders and know not all memory cards are created equal. I searched the net with key words 'gopro memory card' and soon found that kingston and patriot cards were recomended. so I got a 16gb kingston 4X and have had absolutly no issues. most of my many other cards will not work.
Dont take the risk... get a kingston 4X (dont get from Ebay.. as its probabally a fake)
Great work Matt. I notice you have a colour filter on most of your vids??
Is that a mac preset or do you have your own?? I use premiere cs3 and looking at doing similiar. Adds more depth to the vid
i do use a bit of color correction - although that Go pro HD sample had minimal if any correction done to it.
Any editor will usually have a 3 way color corrector - depending on the exposure of the shot i like to:
1. boost the color saturation
2. crush the blacks a touch
3. work the mids and whites to get a nice contrasty look to the picture.
this is an easy grade that works for 90% of the shots that i feel need color correction.
Magic bullet looks is really good if you want to add more advanced / intense color correction / vignettes / blurs- but it usually doesnt preview in real time so can be time consuming to use. I used to use it alot but now find that my basic grade (1,2 and 3 above) works for most of the stuff that needs a teak.
This stuff is usually applied to HDV , DV and helmet cam stuff. Footage out of my Panasonic HVX202 usually looks great and doesnt need any grading.
Thanks Matt. Been playing around and it definately changes the standard gopro footage dramatically.
By the way your panasonic sounds like the bomb camera
my 16gb Kingston is not working
It'll do short film, but then it'll just hang. You have to leave it or take the battery out to make it respond again.
Boohoo. Hoping for a patch or something from GoPro.
It takes good photos thou... that bit works fine. (these are resized thou)
Hi Guy's can you help i am a kitesurfer and windsurfer in the UK
Just got an HD hero for Christmas yep had problems with the SD cards
Good job I had some or it was going back to the shop !
Transcend 4 GB would not work but took the Transcend 4 GB HC Class 6 out of my
Oregon ATC5 and it worked in the GoPro HD put the other back in the ATC5 working OK
Yes I have a ATC5 and it works well but needed a wider angle and HD
My ATC5 worked straight out of the box !
Just don’t know what 16-32 GB card to get that will work.
Come on Go Pro at least put a card in your top of the range HD to get going on
Can you recommend a card that works ? I can get off e.bay
Now having fun and games with software to edit
I have Power Director v5 just sent them an e-mail think I will have to up-date to v8
Tried AVS but it does not run well keeps semi freezing
