Looks like Italy is in a BAD state of affairs with their hospital system potentially about to collapse. Is this just a microcosm of what lays ahead for the rest of us???

Our system is likely much better than Italy's.

For example we have the National Medical Stockpile made for just this emergency.
www1.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/health-pubhlth-strateg-bio-factsht_stckpile.htm
www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-29/coronavirus-covid19-causes-national-medical-stockpile-to-open/12003980

I read an audit the other night that listed 20 million masks in there. For comparison I read that the US has 12 million.
www.businessinsider.com/usa-1-percent-3-billion-face-masks-needed-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-3?r=AU&IR=T

SBS says we have 54 million now. The audit I read was from 2014. I guess they have been on top of things.
www.sbs.com.au/news/australia-s-frontline-health-workers-to-get-share-of-54-million-new-face-masks

So, on face masks alone, we are 40x more prepared than the US.

If you read what some journos are posting online we are stuffed.
This headline
"
Doctors are "extremely pissed off" at the government's coronavirus response as patients slam testing "shambles". Here's what you should do."

If you read further down he got his info from a Hindi Doctor in suburban Melbourne FGS.

Question:
Has anyone else wondered why we haven't heard from any of the thousands of people who have recovered?

I haven't seen any media interviews, or heard any personal accounts from people online that have recovered from the Wuhan Flu.
You would think that hearing a first hand account of how 'mild' the virus can be would go a long way towards easing public uncertainty and concern.

Yet nothing out of all the thousands that have supposedly recovered.

Does anyone have any sources?

^^^ Would be fine if remains at that position in the list, but the death rate is doubling every week. You need to focus on the growth rates, not the standalone daily figures. That graph is already outdated, which is the scariest part.

What do you do at the end of the 2 weeks? That's what people will be thinking.... once the run on food begins, toilet paper will be the least of their concerns. Hopefully the government already has plans to address it.... food coupons anyone?

Why stuff around with that. Just have woollies or Coles deliver ,leave at front door. And enjoy fresh. Better still one of those health food mobs that deliver like weight watchers and cure our obesity problem at the same time.

That's right, until they die from the virus, like we said.

I'm glad that's settled. Now, are we playing croquet tomorrow, or trailing money on fishing line behind the Rolls, for the poor people to chase?

OMG we are all doomed . Now let's see, it's effectively only those over 70 with lung issues or other medical probs that are likely to cark it . Most actually show little if any symptoms but we are all going to die . China, Italy , Japan have a much higher percentage of of oldies who are carking it but hey go on and panic

I wonder how many people would treat it as the emergency that it would be. In other words, you don't need to eat the same amount of food you normally would as you really don't know how long you have to last for. You can get by on a lot less than you otherwise eat, but most people won't want to.

Okay, maybe if you are already skinny, but if you are carrying a few extra emergency kilos, you won't need to eat much at all.

Ever watched Survivor when they were critical about how much food they gave the contestants? They still got by on very little rice and protein, and they were okay. A little skinnier, but otherwise okay.

You mean like SARS, bird flu, swine flu...?

Yes, and no. It's interesting to look at the comparison.

People are saying that SARS had a lower infection rate. I just read the WHO global consensus report on SARS, and it appears it had an R0 of around 3, but this was reduced to below 1 by infection control measures. As a result, even with a mortality rate of around 10%, only 800 people died from it.

Coronavirus seems to have a similar R0 of around 3, but a much lower mortality rate than SARS. Yet, there are over 100,000 cases and 4,000 deaths, with the number of infections doubling every 4-5 days and the daily death rate on a steady rise. Project those numbers and there is potential for millions of deaths.

I draw the conclusion that rather ironically, the lower mortality rate of Coronavirus is making it more deadly. People were so freakin' scared about SARS that the infection control was effective. However, so many people are complacent about Coronavirus that they are mostly ignoring any infection control and going about their normal daily activities, thus the continuing exponential growth. Most countries have done sweet FA until it is too late. If Corona was killing 10%, no doubt we'd all be doing a heck of a lot more to reduce the transmission. There'd be massive blitz education on all TV stations and imperatives given to everyone to follow the advice religiously. We've over 100 confirmed cases in Australia, which is likely more like 1,000 due to the incubation period, the number is climbing steadily each day, and still, the only thing we are really concerned about is running out of toilet paper.

Due to complacency, it has spread globally, which is not like SARS or MERS, and with a mortality rate 30 times higher than swine flu, it's not like that either. Time will tell, I'd love to be wrong, but I feel the Italian twitter post shown earlier in this thread could turn out to be rather prophetic. I'm also amazed by how many people are saying 'who cares, only old people will die', what an absolutely disgusting attitude.
