Hey Gazuki, it shouldn't be news to you because it's human nature. Three "rules" of economics are 1) people are rational; 2) people make decisions based on the margin; 3) people make decisions based on self interest. There will be economists studying these events sometime down the track and wondering why the first two rules were simply ignored by a society in panic

Everyone should have at least 2 weeks of non perishables ready to go.

Why stuff around with that. Just have woollies or Coles deliver ,leave at front door. And enjoy fresh. Better still one of those health food mobs that deliver like weight watchers and cure our obesity problem at the same time.

Yeah!
Let's all take advantage of people who have no financial choice but to work till they drop dead of the virus!
Who's with us??!!

??? You mean keep people ,probably casuals , who need income in jobs is a bad thing because they might earn extra in picking packing delivering .

That's right, until they die from the virus, like we said.

I'm glad that's settled. Now, are we playing croquet tomorrow, or trailing money on fishing line behind the Rolls, for the poor people to chase?

OMG we are all doomed . Now let's see, it's effectively only those over 70 with lung issues or other medical probs that are likely to cark it . Most actually show little if any symptoms but we are all going to die . China, Italy , Japan have a much higher percentage of of oldies who are carking it but hey go on and panic

Careful, your ignorance is showing.

But I have to admit I also support a fair bit of dying for people that aren't me, so fek all those old people. Amirite!?!

No not ignorance , been there done that. Perhaps you better start a veggie garden, that's where your greens come from, get a few chooks, a duck or two oh a milking goat might be a good idea . Armageddon

Been there done that?
You mean living through a pandemic as wide spread this Wuhan Flu will be or killing old people?

My votes on the latter.

You mean like SARS, bird flu, swine flu...?

Normally I find your input rational and sensible.
So you can imagine my surprise when I saw this ridiculous comparison you made.

I find the sales person's insight more appropriate - people make decisions based on emotion, then try to justify their actions with logic.

" We do not know why we see more young cases now, at the age of 30 and 40 in recent days. We do not have time to even think about the causes, but can only state that it is more common than we expected based on data from China."

Yep, it's only getting the old people...

Just in case anyone still thinks the numbers from China have ever been honest.

The rate of new cases is accelerating, again, while cases of recovery are dropping. Not the best.

I would love to have to the time and motivation to collect such headlines as the following and see if they're as far off base as other futurist predictions...

Whether they do or not, it comes down to if the CCP want to report them. Just like they have all along.

I don't see this as any great comfort. We vaccinate for those diseases that are above and to the right., and the ones with the high death rates have had very strong responses to control the spread. What we do know is it is spreading very fast, and the death rate is on a steady climb. Saying "it's not so bad" is exactly why it's now becoming so bad.

Our PM was giving the advice on the radio 'not to panic as its only a minor illness'. WTF? I pray that he is saying this to calm people down, but behind the scenes does not believe this and is actually doing something to combat it.

Maybe this helps people, but maybe it doesn't if they think 'well its meant to be minor, and I might have it, but I should be free to mix with other people...'

I spoke to my daughter in law yesterday who is doing her induction into the ICU unit of our local hospital. I asked her if there had been any conversation with regard to the Corona virus,

She said there had been a bit and that the general consensus is that it is a massive media hype.

I don't get this line of reasoning...mainly cause there isn't one.

If it's all just media hype, why did China lock down 11 million people in Wuhan, right back at the start when only 60 people had died?

Why is Italy locked down etc...?

Where/how does the media hype come into it?

That's what the locals in Italy were saying 2 weeks ago.
Now they are out of icu beds with over 100 people a day dead.

Indeed! I don't think people are following the logic with this one. There are people dying. These are not always elderly or already sick.

The symptoms are only obvious after you are already contagious.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that this makes it more serious than SARS was, yet people seem to downplay it with 'its not as deadly as SARS...'. Well it is as you are going to have a higher chance of catching it.
