OK, so the idea of just tacking some stuff together to see how it looks and weighs has gotten a little out of control

she is just shy of 9kg at this point.

The good old jump test

Part of any good build and/or pre-flight check

those big un-neccessary peices of angle iron will be in the way of your legs and knees, cut them off and put them back on the shed trusses. alittle wee plate or scrap of 10mm rod will be plenty.
hows that for a hint

Thanks Paul,

I was thinking the angle would give some extra support as the pipe is only 32mm x 3mm. bracing here would effectively reduce the length of the pipe. Also this would take a lot of the load off the weld, (I'm getting a lot better, but i don't trust my welding that much.)

10mm bar would most likely be heaver that the angle, (also i had the angle and would have to go and get the bar, I'd had a beer by this stage!) I was originally thinking some 12x3 flat bar, but i didn't have any of that either.

A small plate as a gusset would have been a good idea. Why didn't you suggest that earlier?

I'll have to have another look at the ergonomics of it, although this is not an OTT. I was following the idea of Iand's and putting the fork under the knees.

Im starting to see a reinforcing strap running along the main spine running under the mast step. I reckon the mast loads will bend it downwards

I suspect you might be right Paul. In my mind the "roof trusses" were originally suposed to start forward of the mast step. But i decided to work with what i had at hand.

I figure this is really an experiment and it hasn't cost me anything i am not too worried if it disintergrates. I can always cut stuff off and weld stuff on. Also hit stuff with a big hammer.

In my experience you usually learn more from failure than success. (also failure can sometimes be a bit of fun)

evn a 4oomm of 8mm round would be plenty , just to stop that initial fail from starting

Its been said that the flat and OTT Y-frame mini's use larger diameter/higher tensile steel for their axles. Would it be worth an experiment to use scaffold tube (48.4x4.47mm T6) instead, or is it obviously too stiff for this size yacht (I wouldn't know as I've never seen scaff tube)? I'm picturing a frame similar to the 'Christmas' yacht

Just found a (relatively) newly opened outlet for 'Direct Alluminium' in Bendigo, and they have 6.5m scaff tube lengths for $110. Tomorrow I'll ring up and see what other T6/T8 they might have

EDIT: Yes, I know scaf tube has been used for class 5 landyacht axles. Although it has been mentioned it may not be stiff enough for the purpose (assuming Y-frame here as well).
