Been a bit of a mention of the Savage Defiance 30 on these pages.
So here are some pics of the ongoing full restoration of the very original S&S Design 2096.
This boat gave rise to the Savage Defiance and the Northstar 1000 both of which are derivatives of design 2096.
It is not the plug for the Savage boats, that is a boat called Pajen built by Jack Savage
So built by Doug Booker for his father and launched in September 1972 it is laminated frames with triple Oregon planking.
Interior is still clear finished mahogany.
Aim was to stop any further deterioration at present

<div>Relaunch after 8 years in the storage yard, not in great shape, one more summer and it would be a writeoff!

<div>But another 2 weeks the storage yard owners were putting the chainsaw through it as the yard was been redeveloped.

<div>So that would have been the end of an ICON.

On relaunch, will worry about the cosmetic stuff later but now all good for another 42 years.

<div>Will have more pics later but much of the work was repairing modifications done after the original build that had been done wrongly.

<div>for instance a anchor locker was cut through the foredeck but not sealed properly so about 1m of deck was replaced.

<div>Various deck fittings had not been put in properly and so rot had developed.

<div>The on;y thing that saved it was the Oregon hull was in perfect condition still except where water had got behind a skin fitting.

<div>worm damage to the leading edge of the rudder was a small repair and a paint tin left in the cockpit had caused the cockpit floor under it to rot out.

<div>Aim is to spend probably 6 months getting the interior right and then do the external painting.

Brilliant work by the guys at David Glenn boatbuilders scarfing in the full three layers of Oregon planking to water damage caused by a damaged skin fitting that had not been properly repaired. Two layers in with one to go.

Luckily the deck was two layers of mahogany ply so the glue line stopped much water egress so much of the work was replacing the top layer only.
I can't speak highly enough of the guys doing the work. Super skilled and loved the job.

Ain't it a bitch how an old forlorn yacht can ignite your passion and empty your bank account??

Nice job lydia. A very worthy project. Where abouts was she and where is she now?

And yours truly in the darker cap, racing two handed to Botany Bay that day back in the early 80s.

Last thing I needed was another wooden boat restoration so this makes number 4 over 20 years.
So lapse of judgement really.
Here so pics of one of the others

Great work by Peter Kerr from Deagon Slipway who posts here as "boty"
One of the best guys you can ever work with.
I don't understand why southerners don't bring their boats up to Queensland to get these guys working.

If we are really lucky 'Boty' might put up some photos of the beautiful timber Dhow he is currently building for a client. It is something really different. Peter's skills on timber boats is second to none and his skills on the new exotics isn't to bad either.

That Oregon planking looks as good as the day it was put on the frames. Try buying that kind of quality timber now.

Frames are on 10 inch centres and all laminated.
Then you have the three layers of diagonal planking.
Planks are full length.
Cost today????
