Keep up the photos Lydia, she's looking great!
Man, it looks weird seeing no stanchions on a keel boat.

Don't be surprised if he keeps it that way for the purist ethic.

Took this for a sail yesterday, so will race this a bit more now Defiance is stabilized.
So Defiance will be more towards the Wooden Boat Show circuit.
Historically significant boat, in very original condition and hopefully with a great finish.

Capitalist pig. More than one yacht is bad for your health.

Hey Lydia

Hows the Defiance going?

Any progress pics?

There was one down at Blairgowrie years ago, royal blue topsides, Sari Marais I think she was called.

The work is about the start again.
New engine coming and a change to the engine beds.
Just had some other obligations to deal with in the last few months.
Besides winter in Qld is the best time to work on the boats.
Still planning for Christmas in Tasmania.
News at eleven as they say
Cheers

I had a look last week. Like many re builds, things are uncovered that were hidden. Lydia is doing this once - correctly. I'm looking forward to when I'm asked back to have a steer.

Did the defiance 30 come in a longer cabin version as well.
Or was it the S&S that had a longer version.

This is the original Defiance, being S & S design 2096
So as to original plans
The Savage built grp production boats first had this deck profile but mostly had the longer wedge cabin to give more room forward.

Just keep going!

Putting the V drive back in?

She's utterly beautiful Lydia, thanks for the pictures. Why do old wooden boats get to me so much? There is something about the engineering and craftwork, I'd be happy just crawling all over it let alone sailing her.
More pics is always good!

R, no v drive, it was a major decision as Vetus make a good V gear box but with the small size of new engines decision was made to fit a straight gear box and a new 27hp Vetus.
We will lose a little cabin space and the engine box will be the stairs so not losing that much usable space either but the simplicity was the key point.
Rough calculations show we will move the fuel tank and batteries (currently under a bunk) to the centre line aft of the new engine. so trim should be very close.
And I would rather have those items on the centre line.
The 27hp Vetus is lighter than the 20hp Lister which came out.
This has been the biggest lost cost on the job so far as I was pretty sure I could sort out the Lister, but at some time probarly to stop an overheat problem someone removed the heat exchanger core and was running raw water through both sides of the cooling system.
The boat then sat on the hard for 9 years without the system drained.
Damage to the cooling galleries would always be unknown and the water pumps needed complete replacement.
I could not have known this at the start but that is the risk you take.
Things you find out as you go!

Absolutely first class Lydia. I'm with Shaggy on the engineering and craftsmanship, they are a joy to behold. Don't you
think such labour intensive structures such as wooden boats retain the spirit of the craftsmen that build them ?.

Lovely stuff lydia. So the "Vetus" engine, what is it really?? Marinised Mitsubishi, Kubota or...........?? What price by the way?

You are not just a pretty face Craig!
All the congrats on your persistence and boty's workmanship! It is thoroughly nice.

Vetus is Dutch made, this days owned by Vetus-Maxwell. I think it was Kubota based if l am not mistaken.

This is an old pic taken after the initial clean up so finished product should be a lot cleaner.
floor board were varnish without proper cleaning so will fix that this time!
As to the engine depends on size but 18 and 27 are a Mitsubishi base.

This is pretty scary comment as it means some of my earlier timber boats have had the spirit of some very scary people!
