Kirsten Neusch?fer is just a breath away from winning the Golden Globe Race and is on the verge of breaking most of the Golden Globe Race records, including best distance over 24 hours (unofficially 218.9 nautical miles), and best distance over 7 days (unofficial at 1143.7 nautical miles). And of course if she wins, First Woman to win the Golden Globe Race. And she doesn't know!

GGR sailors have no internet onboard (per the race rules) and use satellite communication only for scheduled race calls and emergency. During her final sat phone call today with race officials, she expressed her excitement at drawing near the line and was looking forward to fresh fruit and ice cream ashore, but she did not know where she or the other GGR competitors stood in the race.

100 miles to go!

A amazing journey. That's a serious looking Mainsheet system!

Yeah replaces a traveler. Wonder what the winch on the top of the back of the tiller is? Is it part of the wind vane setup?

Probably to winch in a Jordan series drogue or similar when deployed.

If it's bolted down to the tiller I would think that would rip your rudder off.

To win first you must finish. Amazing effort.

Looks like it sits on a bracket above the tiller and not on the tiller.

Let's not forget number 2.
Abhilash Tomy has crossed the finish line.
He actually answered my email when he was recovering form the broken back after his sinking in the last race, so I have been following him keenly.

Abhilash Tomy apparently used his storm sail on the backstay on occasions for extra power when reaching. I guess it's one way to keep yourself amused. Good to see a servo windvane self steering gear finish in immaculate condition!

Yes from other pictures that is the case and from her original tour of the boat video before departing

she explains (@13.28) that it is a multipurpose winch (storm sail sheets/jury rig...) to avoid the more conventional solution of two additional winches in the cockpit which would have presented difficulties with her coaming/cockpit design. She says there she didn't intend to carry a drouge preferring instead the Robin Knox-Johnston solution of a simple warp perhaps dragged in a U shape led either side.

Yeah cool idea with a block and tackle further down the back stay to drag the halyard up. Might add a fair bit of extra backstay tension so would want to run it past a naval architect first and perhaps beef up the backstay and backstay chainplate/s. Poor man's ketch :).

Would want to run it past the rules first so you didn't invest the best part of a year for nothing.

Can't recall where the tack was. Might make the cockpit awkward but probably high enough off the deck to avoid that. Like a large version of those at anchor riding sails one occasionally sees advertised

Full marks for ingenuity!

Sadly, his Windpilot system did not get away unscathed. Both the servo blade and the vane broke. And both took several attempts at repairs. These involved cutting up his dunny door and then his chart table; and the anchor shaft for the rudder. Also he hand-sewed his mainsail when it ripped in half. Many other repairs including runners........Mr Fixit!!
Well done!!!!!!!!!!
