That is a very nice yacht and she has a big rig on her. Obviously amateur built but done very well.
The tiller steering is the way to go for that yacht. I would probably remove that boxy looking dodger and go for a lower profile hard dodger or have a canvas dodger. I am not fussed on that big gantry on the stern either.

If she is indeed true to Adams design and in as good condition as the photos show, I think it is a bargain at $55,000.

Yes, but not pretty

Do you think the 30 HP engine is adequate?
What cruising speed would we get at what amount of fuel per hour?

They have probably spent more than the asking price on it.

Fitted out a hard chine Adams 40 with my dad in my teens. I sailed on her for years and she went on to go to Africa and back, circumnavigate Aus and sail the Pacific. I love the Adams 40s and really liked the look of this one when I visited Camden Haven earlier this year. The only niggles for me are she might be light on for headroom with the lower topsides (Adams was a short-@rse who and designed boats accordingly) and I agree with Bundybouy and Cisco the 30 Hp would really just be an auxiliary as the 36Hp on our boat would not get us upwind against anything over 40 knots if there was any sea running. Still looks like a good one though. Bill

Yes,
Thanks Bill,
It will be interesting to see how long it takes to sell.
Probably just needs the right buyer.

A mate's son who worked with Sydney Tall Ships is going thru the inspection, survey process with this classic design. He has already been aboard and says its perfectly dry with no sign of damage to the timber anywhere. He's young and fit (for now) so the ongoing work, esp varnishing shouldn't be a problem for this young marine engineer...here's luck to him. I also suggested he might like the next boat if he wasn't so wedded to the NZ timber hull, similar money. yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/alden-schooner/229425 and yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/roberts-56-ketch-50-ft-lod/199859

A Brazilian couple just bought this boat, it has been standing out in the weather on the hard for about the last twenty years without any love being lavished on it and for a steel boat I think it is in fantastic condition.

I have found this one interesting since seeing it built when I was a kid in Port Sorell (Tasmania). She pops up up for sale now and then, and I often think she fits a very specific set of requirements very well (shallow draft, beachability, and easy handling) ... Others not so much.
One of the more aesthetically acceptable Bolger builds I've seen;).

I've never seen that steel boat. The Brolga is moored about 30 metres off the dinghy rack, not sure if the mooring is going with the boat. Nice interior and well fitted out. Excellent engine. Has wheel steering which spoils it a bit, can't see the point of standing out in the weather. The topsides have been painted a few years ago and the paint is very poor. Needs a few hours with a random orbital sander and a repaint and it would be an excellent boat. Probably been here 2 years and I have seen it off the mooring once!

Not sure whether I like the cork cabin sole etc. Smart fuel gauges and I like the squeeze bulb for priming.

HI Ramona,
Please explain in more detail.
Do you mean condition, material, design etc?

Yes construction of the hull and deck, could be composite or fibreglass. It would help sell a boat if the ad had a few basics.

What do you guys reckon of this S&S 34 ? I don't really understand why it has been for sale so long. Looks immaculate, good sail wardrobe, new rig, new engine, etc. Dosent show interior though which instantly means it is Sus to me. Anyone know any history of "Muloka" on the association it doesn't have a page.

Mick

Mulloka.
Very competitive and well raced yacht out of Sandringham Yacht Club Victoria from 1975 by Paul Jacka who was in the eighties Commodore .
Always looked a very well cared for boat when in Vic.

Raced a number of S/H and Westcoasters with ORCV.

Thanks BananaBender. The only other information I have got about it is it used to be yellow. And there is a model of it at Sandringham yacht club.
Interesting why it hasn't sold yet. Not many other ss34's for sale.

Mottle 33

$28,000

Shoalhaven Heads

For Sale $28,000 1982 Mottle 33 Sailing Yacht Unfortunately up for sale as work is now placing me over seas full time.
33ft/10.1m 4.5t 4-6 berth Marine head New Muir anchor winch with new 8mm chain New Bimini top New Solar system with CTEK 250SA and Smartpass charger New Starter and house battery New main traveller system Repowered with a Volvo D1-30 in 2007 and currently has less than 200 hours on it! 100L fuel tank (Burns 1L per hour @ 6kts with) Head sail in great condition Main is 65% but usable Spinnaker and pole included All safety equipment Everything needed to go sailing is all there. Pre-purchase and insurance survey (18months old) Im overseas at the moment but will put more photos up in a week or so. The Joe Adams designed MOTTLE 33 was well ahead of its time with many design features still incorporated in today's later model production boats, and was a real leader as a true cruiser/racer. The layout with the double berth in the private aft cabin provides the perfect solution for families with privacy for the adult. A double vee berth is fwd then seating for 6 people around the saloon table which drops to form another huge berth for 2 people. Moving Aft you have the galley with gas burner starboard and enclosed head with shower on the port side. A large Ice box holds enough food for a week onboard. Continuing aft down the Starboard side you have a large storage shelf/pilot berth with plenty of storage underneath and a large engine bay panel giving huge amounts of access for servicing. In the Aft cabin there's a large berth for 2 with plenty of storage underneath. Im looking to pass the boat onto someone who will make good use of it and give her the love she deserves. The Mottle is a strong, well known boat that has a great reputation, one of them even sailed to Antarctica! She's been sitting for the past 3 months but is in great usable condition, or spend a little time and money and you'll have yourself a $40,000 boat in no time. Selling at this price to someone that will put her to good use. Currently moored in Shoalhaven heads the Mooring apparatus will be up for sale as well.

I had a long talk with the owner Sunday morning.
He said the motor runs well in neutral, but problems when in gear. Sounds under stress.
He thinks there is possibly seaweed or barnacles on the prop stopping it from opening?

2GM is unlikely to have been new when the boat was built, so the hour meter may be a bit wrong. But they are fairly bullet proof motors. The symptoms sound like the gearbox or saildrive is failing (having been there / done that). Not a big thing to replace, and the parts are still available.

Looks good value if you are prepared to spend another 10-15 on it.
