Because they are? There are a lot of people on there who are new to the surf and think they know what they're talking about because they've been SUPing for a few years, more than newcomers to that sport. But they have no background in the waves themselves. In surfing, when I grew up you spent years learning the hard yards and slowly worked your way up the ladder gaining skill and experience until you earned a spot in the rotation. Nowadays all you need is a couple of grand and a paddle. Thankfully, most surf craft preclude the rider putting themselves and others in too much danger. Unfortunately, SUPers are very different due to their particular characteristics.
No problem with some, big problems with others. In general, those with a longtime surfing background are no problem it seems. But the overwhelming majority have no background.
Guys like dogman, greenroom, a whole bunch of others who I forget since I rarely go there, no problem.
If there were no bullies, no trolls, no Doggies and Legions which I have maintained for many years are really 1 single person code name DogLeg Seabreeze would be that boring I would come back far less.
It's adversity that keeps things interesting, and entertainment.........
You're right PR, I kinda came to the realisation I was wasting my time. So laurie did me a favour. But e.g. I was with a whole bunch of clueless kooks on SUPs last year at this one spot. They were a danger to themselves, each other, and other surf craft. It wasn't a problem at all when it got bigger, but unfortunately it's not always big and then I'd have to interact with these crew. Just blatant repeated dropping in, ditching boards, getting in the way, etc, etc. Low ability level but since they're already standing up and they've got paddling power they've automatically jumped 30 rungs up the ladder and don't need a fundamental skill set. And these are the sorts of people who I read posting on that forum. So occasionally I'd try to pass on advice etc, but unfortunately due to my immaturity usually with a barbed tongue.
There was one good guy. And about 20 kooks. Bit like the SUP forum.
dear mrs legion. i feel it is my duty to inform you that if you look at the top of the page it says 'LONGBOARD'.
if you insist on arguing about sups in the longboard forum, at least have the decency to use this forums code word which is 666.
thankyou
must be hell- nowhere it preach to the heathens
Legion your point on progressing up the ladder is well made and certainly my experience. However, I don't get how these 666'ers actually make it out the back, read the surf, takeoff and presumably make it back out again without some sort of clue. If you are saying that this is their first experience of surfing then that's a pretty good effort especially at the place you observed this behaviour, did this stuff happen when it was below head high? If so I can kind of understand, any bigger and they would have taken some beatings right? best way to learn and to thin a crowd at the same time.
Not raw beginners. Just kooks. At a well-known place that's a big, wide open reef zone. There's plenty of scope to paddle out and not get wet, even for kooks. I can paddle out (with lots of luck) on an 8' day and not get hammered. Other times I can get washed through the inside on a 4-6' day. The days with trouble were 3-4' and under, no problem for a kook. Lots of deep water around for safety, come steaming in when you think you've got it. Someone else in position? No problem, you've already bagsed this one from 100m away. Someone else already up 20m inside you? Too late, no way to stop your momentum. Not used to the feel of a wave? No problem, just fall off backwards or drift sideways up the face then dive off the back and let the board go sideways over the falls. People sitting in exactly the takeoff spot patiently waiting their turn? Nup, seen a wave so paddle madly inside the crew from 20m further out and 20m further on the shoulder until you're just inside. First to see it deserves it, right? Etc.
A big part of the problem was it was wind crew who've found a new craze. Something to do before the breeze comes in. No awareness of waves or surf zone at all.
I got in an almost fight. It was ugly and sucked.
As soon as it is over 4', the crowd magically thins. Particularly over 6'.
Is this the new 'shark' topic of the Beer Garden? And to think 'bullying' was confined to my generation... Alrighty, it's time to drop the topic! Weekends here! Grab a beer and surf!
I reckon paddle supping is fun but why would you bother when there is waves? Surf a lb if under waist high and a shorty if over. Problem solvered.
