This on my FB page today. Even the Professional fisherman are saying it won't work

What a crokk of sh!t.
To me all they are trying to do is get gillnetting reintroduced in Perth waters.
Gillnetting IMO is far far worse than drum lines.
At least drum lines are more specific as to what they catch. Not saying you won't have bycatch but not in the magnitude of gillnetting.
Not only do thay catch and kill sharks but what about the dolphins, turtles, whales etc etc.
If your infavour of gillnetting over drumlines JB i'm shocked...

Im not in favour of either. But i will say i agree to their reasons as to why the sharks are here. Thats why i say Drum lines won't make any difference AT ALL..

Stay out of water if sharks have been spotted in the area

Like Brighton/Scarborough/Trigg for three days in a row and counting?

WA Fisheries said..

Stay close to shore (within 30m of the water's edge)

Nope. That would be a rarity for me. Even pushing it when bodysurfing.

WA Fisheries said..

Don't go in the water alone (stay in groups)

I prefer to surf alone or with as few as possible rather than 50 of my best mates. Unless it's at my local(s), where I can deal with a crowd. Many, many times this winter I was outside earshot range of other people.

WA Fisheries said..

Avoid water temperatures lower than 22C

So don't surf from late autumn to mid spring, longer further south?

WA Fisheries said..

Avoid water depths of greater than 5m when swimming or surfing

I would do this at beach breaks, but lots of reef breaks have > 5m around. And Ken Crew and Ben Linden definitely weren't in > 5m of water.

WA Fisheries said..

Avoid swimming after heavy storms, or in low light (dusk and dawn)

Heavy storms are the only driver of swell in Perth, so count winter out. I reckon this applies more to bulls though.
Low light - I surf a lot at dawn and dusk. Before or after work. I can't take three hours out in the middle of the day but I can before/after work.

WA Fisheries said..

Avoid swimming if there are seals, dolphins, whales or baitfish nearby

Seal colonies all over the place now. So rule out most rocky coastlines within a few hours of Perth. See dolphins all the time. Whales all September/October. Baitfish, always.

Following these guidelines would mean essentially giving up surfing and swimming.

And the probability thing doesn't apply. Plenty of Australians go for a few splashes a year in the shoreline. Not many spend hundreds of hours a year.

I see the mistake he's made there, he's extrapolated that since there's been population growth in WA, there's been a matching increase in shark attacks, as if sharks walk on land. Without any evidence to back this up, of course.
Paul Andrew, SLSWA chief executive says there's LESS people in the water "You just have to see first thing in the morning, the number of people on our beaches compared with five years ago has significantly diminished,"

au.news.yahoo.com/survivors-relive-shark-encounters-20080231.html

whilist i'd agree there's hundreds more kitesurfers, and probably boaties, anecdotally i'd say every single other water using group has dropped in the last 5 years in these local areas.

Nah just guessing. Anything over 2m will do. Things underwater are magnified anyway so it'll look like it's 3m.
How are Queenslands drumlines and nets going btw?

I just thought id correct something. In the above article Survivors-relieve-encounters/ it says that Martin Kane of the the Mullaloo attack supports a cull. Truth is he does in fact not support it. I just doubled checked and he was quoted as saying change is needed? We need to do more study and find out why these attacks are happening?

ACtually the boys involved in that incident were to be interviewed by 60 Minutes just after the attack and they declined it after they were miss quoted in the press..

If surfers are serous about safety in the water, maybe we should let more jet skiers ride in the surf zones That would scare of most sharks I can see crowds would be a problem in the metro, but maybe at least for breaks down south that would work well
