On that note, conversation veered toward WA's recent state election, which Lyon followed very closely. "One of Labor's promises was that if it got in it'd provide a $200 rebate for scientifically proven shark deterents," says Lyon.A fortnight ago the Labor government won in a landlside victory."The wording of that promise is important," identifies Lyon ."Scientifically proven. Shark Shield are the only device on the market that's undergone independent scientific testing and the technology has been proven to work.""You can't throw those words around without expecting a visit from Consumer Affairs or the ombudsman."So there you have it, WA surfers. Not only do you get piece of mind from what's lurking below but you save an extra $200.As long as the politicians keep their promise, of course.

Im glad someone else picked up on that. I also have it on file from Dave Kelly it will be for any scientifically tested product. SO the Shark shield unit "New" Surf model has not been tested. They are relying on the testing of the dive version freedom 7, utilising a stainless electrode, not a MM thick sticker..

Happy Days for Dave

Shark shields on jet ski's at the Margys pro is nothing more than product placement. Just like the leg rope magnets from last year..

Originally the offer/announcement was a $200 Rebate on purchasing a device, up 1000 units.

Seabin founder Pete Ceglinski battles hard to make ocean-cleaning dream a reality

ut the story of the Seabin Project and the man who now leads the team is a much longer story.Pete is a man who demands a lot of himself. And of others. He and his friend Andrew Turton are the co-founders of the Seabin Project. They wanted to develop a product that collected floating rubbish in marinas and ports, but also use it to educate people about the damage being done every day to the oceans. The Seabin sucks in water and rubbish, which gets caught in a catch bag filter.

I got one of his old team longboards and its an amazing board. It has these extra stringers on the underside only about an inch from the rail edge. Beautiful board and so easy to ride.

WEST COAST

Best Videographers Under 30 in California

Highlighting the Golden State's finest shooters

WORDS BY MARCUS SANDERS

Presented by

The surf movie started in California.

IN THE '50S AND '60S, IN DARKENED HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUMS ACROSS THE SOUTHLAND, STOKED SURFERS GATHERED TO WATCH FOOTAGE (SHOT MOSTLY THE PREVIOUS YEAR), DRINK BEER AND YELL AT THE SCREEN. IT WAS THE ONLY CHANCE TO FIND OUT WHAT THE HELL WAS HAPPENING IN THE SURF WORLD OUTSIDE YOUR HOMEBREAK, AND GAVE LOCALS A CHANCE TO TALK STORY WITHOUT COMPETING FOR WAVES. This continued for decades. Films got better and more highly-produced each year - until the advent of the home VCR and camcorders in the '90s, which democratized the whole process, and shrunk the screen size. Guys like Taylor Steele realized that you could film your buddies ripping down the street all day, and then watch the same footage that night and heckle each other. Many raw, under-produced, hour-long punk edits ensued. Then came web edits for computer screens in the 2000s. The length of film slowly shrank to five minutes or less - and the turnaround time shrank to near-realtime. And while some bemoan the disposable nature of web clips (now consumed on even smaller screens) the one ironic thing is that as screens have shrunk from big to medium to small to your phone, equipment has gotten better and more accessible and the actual quality of the edits is off the charts. Which brings us to the 13 guys profiled here. All these guys grew up alongside the internet. They never had to wait a year to sit in a dusty auditorium to see the latest in hot-surfing action. Since high school, anything they've ever wanted to know has never been farther away than a couple swipes. But before they were legally allowed to drink, they'd probably seen hundreds of hours of surf video - all of which helped inform their varied aesthetics. Which, as you'll see from their reels, are as varied and beautiful as the state itself.

Great story on the board and IMO about some of the best surfing of all time...
( link is under the intro)

Mark Rabbidge remembers the phone call like it was yesterday. The year was 1993 and Derek Hynd, the one-eyed former-pro surfer turned leading finless exponent, was steering the ship at Rip Curl. He had a vision of his charger Tom Curren doing his thing at J-Bay and needed a board, the perfect board. He picked up the phone and called Rabbidge.

I'm kidding. Sort of. It wasn't Greg Noll alone who convinced Australian surfers to quit riding for Queen and clubhouse in 1956, and just do it for their own selfish enjoyment. No, peel it back further and I think what this great protean moment in surf history comes down to is how you look while carrying your craft across the beach. It's like the way teenaged boys used to pick up guitars, to get into bands, to get onstage, to get chicks. The young male brain. Unformed in many ways, but smart enough, cunning enough, to understand what draws the female eye. So look below. Put yourself in the beanie-covered mind of an Sydney beach clubbie. There's your mates over there, grimacing manfully toward the shorebreak, each one yoked to his club ski like he'd committed a crime against the shire. And now here comes the Yanks, relaxed, crooked little half smiles, holding those new boards like pool cues.

The Old bloke always told me Phil had the best style of the late 50s early 60s? Thoughts.

He does have a great style and effortless way to ride a wave.

Phil Edwards, patron saint of power surfing, was the last of the greats to switch from balsa to poly. He didn't like the smell of foam, didn't like industrial blank-blowing process, and especially didn't like the way the new boards felt underfoot. "Good on wood, spastic on plastic," as Edwards liked to say. In 1957 or '58, just as foam was taking over as the boardmaker's core material of choice, Edwards made himself a new balsa, and loved it enough to name it "Baby." He kept that board year after year, even as he slowly, reluctantly, made the change to foam. Fixed the dings, brought it to Hawaii and Australia. In Bruce Brown's 1962 movie Surfing Hollow Days, Bruce introduces Edwards, who squats down in his backyard next to a trio of shiny new multi-stringer foam boards of his own design. "He makes beautiful boards, but the board he still likes to ride best of all"-here Brown cuts to a shot of Edwards almost sheepishly holding his battered favorite- "is an old balsa wood he calls Baby."
