Looked like young Tommy was having a ball and a good workout, those waves weren't worth surfing on anything else but a sup, so what is the problem?

No probs if ya wanna look like a kook

That's the thing, I could not care less if I look like a kook, I have accepted my inner kook many years ago, I am a shortboarder first, but in wave that are worth surfing, if you live in Perth , well that is your choice as is apparently it is my choice to be overwight

Problem is that the kook ratio out in the water is probably 75% at any given time. IF you class SUP riders as kooks then all well and good you should be happy. Dont know why all the complaining then. Would much rather surf with a heap of kooks than like here sometimes on
the Goldy when its chockers full of pros

Thing is Dazza, on the Goldy if you want I reckon the ratio is more like 80:20 paddler to
board. can go anywhere for a good uncrowded surf. I
was over in Feb and had some great uncrowded surf, even at Greenmount. If thats an excuse
to ride a SUP well it isnt a good one imo, get a mal..

I agree Doggie I regularly get uncrowded waves on the GC and ride my SB's 70% of the time.
Have a mal and only bring the mal or SUP out for the small stuff ie below waist high. I am
not a grommie anymore and I can't be stuffed paddling a 5'10 22'wide fish as the enjoyment
wouldn't be there.

The problem is a kook on a SUP is a much more dangerous proposition than a kook on a shortboard and much more difficult for me to manage. Due to their propensity to sit outside, and due to the size and volume of the board when they invariably fall off, and due to their propensity to hang on to their paddle and ditch their board, and due to the length of their leggie, and due to their inability to paddle through a break. Etc.

Funny double kook story - on my now not-so-recent last trip I was chatting to another bloke most of the trip. On one particular day he paddled back out after a wave laughing. Said as he paddled he watched an old fella take off on his belly and eventually got to his feet. Reckoned it must've just been an aberration. Later I was also paddling back out and watched the same old fella do the same thing. Problem was, a kook on a SUP on the shoulder must've thought the old fella blew it, because he blatantly dropped in (well, maybe he was just an arsehole). Poor old fella started shouting and carrying on as they collided and banged boards together down for a good 8m before they both fell off. Funny stuff. The old fella was probably an ideal candidate for a SUP. Then he wouldn't struggle with the getting to the feet issue.

OK, back on topic. I don't like how it seems a majority of SUPers come from non-surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, whatever backgrounds and show a complete lack of knowledge of how a break works.

I also don't like the shorts over wetsuit look.

There was a guy on my last trip. I mean, I don't really know any SUPers but guys on the SUP forum do, I've seen the pics. It's apparently a crossover from the kitesurfing guys.

i can't see the point of doing it ,no practical benefits (but there was a time in my young life where i thought white volleys were mandatory with blue jeans and white t-shirt!!)
there is one exception where boardshorts over the wetsuit is justified and that is if you have the dakine harness shorts, the harness bar attaches to the boardies rectified by buying another harness for the cold days when you wear a wetsuit
if you wanted to split hairs there is a distinction between kitesurfers and kiteboarders (where the boardshort over the wetsuit thing comes from )ie twin tip boards strapped and people riding surf specific boards with or without straps
personally i am pretty sh8te with straps on a board so i just ride my normal 6'4 epoxy without straps gives me alternative when the wind is onshore and from a surfing viewpoint i spend a sh8tload more wave time actually standing/controlling my board than i do in a normal surf ie 3-4 mins riding time on waves in a normal surf as opposed to maybe 20-25 mins or more kitesurfing..hardest part is teaching yourself to ride switchfoot after so many years of surfing ...
i still would go for a surf first anyday but there aren't many kitesurfers locally so crowding is never an issue.... somedays i can't get the first few lines of the Dr Seuss classic out of my head kitesurfing (or surfing for that matter when its uncrowded)

On the far-away island of Sala-ma-Sond,
Yertle the Turtle was king of the pond.
A nice little pond. It was clean. It was neat.
The water was warm. There was plenty to eat.
The turtles had everything turtles might need.
And they were all happy. Quite happy indeed.

Here's another thing to hate - Stand Up Push-with-a-stick Skateboarding. WTF? I really, really thought this was a joke when people first mentioned it but I was wrong.

And another - yoga etc on a SUP.

And another - Laird and how much people want to be like him. Be your own person.

My favourite Dr Suess Prawnhead, closely followed by Oh The Places You'll Go, which perhaps should be mandatory reading for all these sheep that blindly follow stupid fads like SUP.

I have to agree with you on this one Legion. Have been riding skateboards for 35+ years and when I saw the Push Stick Skateboarding I thought WTF too? Maybe there is some upper body or core benefit but looks pretty naff to me and wouldnt be seen dead doing it. To be honest only seen it in the mags havent noticed anyone getting into it. Hope it stays that way.

As for SUP yoga I also thought WHY? but was out on Currumbin Creek doing fitness training last week and paddled past a group of young ladies doing SUP yoga.......say no more I am a fan (watching at least).

Like lifting weights lying on a swiss ball.

Oh yeah, I can appreciate the visual aspect. But if you wanna do yoga for stretching purposes, why do it on an unstable environment like a floating board? That's going to compromise how much you can push your stretches and is a recipe for injury.

The SUP skateboarding thing - there's a whole forum dedicated to it and by the looks of it it's pretty active.

It's nothing to do with what's cool, although you SUPers seem to have a hangup about not being cool.

It's to do with the equipment. If I'm riding a wave, I want to be on the most high-performance equipment suited to the type of surfing I like to do.

If I rode a mal, I might look to get a SUP since I'd be used to trimming and not doing much. Big, long flowing turns. But I like a maneuverable board that I can turn sharply and quickly to its maximum potential. I don't like to just point a big log in a direction and hold on, like TC's floater earlier on in the thread.

well i dont give a fark about being cool. the only thing i agree about on this whole thread is that people should have manners and should only venture were they are not a risk to themselves or other people, thats in the water or dry land. not to try and tell people what is functional and not, thats just rot. if someone wants to go in a straight line go for it,it is not hurting me. as for your egg doggie, ihave seen many people tear bags out off it on that style of board in all sorts of surf(not me) yet i think you will find there is about 10% off people who can actually surf hp short boards and get the most out of them. such is the resurgence of retro boards with a new school twist. most people will far more enjoy surfing them as opposed to a hp sb. most people buy hp sb because of marketing and what is cool. i see more people struggling on a hp board than any other craft on the goldy, which is pretty funny

out at metro location today. A fairly skilled but still gumby (fell of board heaps) sup janitor sweeps out. NO LEGROPE. watching him go in countless times to beach to retrieve board...very amusing. Watching him wobble about as a shoulder high set was approaching and almost fall off... frightening. Especially when I was 10m further in of him and would have got cleaned up. How is it that someone thinks its ok?

Crikey, this thread is still going. What have I started.

Rode the 9'1 Mal again this morning, was the perfect board for the fat weak swell we had.

The difference is, is it fun, or enjoyable?

When I surf I want to enjoy my surf.

If the surf if "fun" then its not Im just surfing and not really enjoying the surf as much. So a fun surf isnt that fun..
