Anybody looking at getting accommodation, but found that you dont need that extra room? Im going by myself up there, as my gear takes up all the other seats :P
Willing to put in $150 for the week. I only will be there to shower and sleep :P
Paid & booked my family of (5), fly in from Auckland to the Gold Coast 23rd March courtesy of JetStar.
At a huge total cost of AUD $430 (incl taxes).
awesome stuff icesurf,
means you will even be able to swing by wello!
are you driving from the goldy or getting a connecting flight?
"the course itself takes up the majority of the speed run, depending on wind direction ie, 3-4 km. so it is hard to sail in the flat water areas without entering the course. another potential issue is that freesailors don't usually attend the briefing and therefore aren't aware of the setup of the course or the instructions for the day regarding right of way and safety controls which can become dangerous out on the water."
...so hyperthetically... if I wish to sail at Burrum that weekend, have insurance, attend the briefing, follow your directions, but DON'T enter the event, should be no worries for me to sail???
As the 'marked channel' at Burrum is the speedrun and is a public waterway that can't be closed to general public use, is there anything that can be legally done to stop someone parking their fishing boat, going for a swim, (or sailing any type of watercraft) there???
Gesty, Could you publish here a map showing exactly WHERE you have permission to use and the rights you have over that particular stretch of water.
Just being the 'devil's advocate' [}:)! Cheers, Mikey
hi mikey,
let's not confuse what i said.
the waterway is not being closed to the public. the usual rules will apply regards 6 knots within 30m of swimmers and moored boats. as you are aware the last 2 years have not seen one swimmer or boat anywhere in sight. to be honest, it would be almost imposible to long term moor a boat there due to tides. but then again who knows what other may be doing.
to put it in context.
what i am referring to is someone who is not part of the event, sailing the course and going there specifically to sail the course. bearing in mind the course is along the bank. if someone wants to sail while the event is on and sails out in the middle of the channel or anywhere else that is not "the course" then good luck to them. i haven't got any issues. it's not specific to this event, any event would have the same outcome. if someone turns up to an event and doesn't sign on and then sails the course they are still making themself part of the "fleet" and in so doing are able to be instructed by fleet co-ordinators. for everyones safety.
as far as attending briefing, insurance etc but not entering officially, what evidence do i have that the briefing has been attended and that they are going to follow race committee instructions. i need something signed.
i know you are being devils advocate but it seems a lot of trouble to go through to then save $40 for a 3 day event. why not just join in officially like everyone else.
and don't forget, it's about the fun.
oh, i will post maps once i get final approval from msq.
Justin are you going to have fluro tops for the sailors this year ? if so it will be very easy to spot non competitors and it's only a matter of having a nice chat to them.
hi choco,
the tops didn't get over the line so we will be using another method to identify all of the competitors. tops will be used next year.
gps and radar racers will also be distinguishable to make it clear to the radar gun operator and try and give the radar class more action.
also, we have devised a plan for the top mark. for those new to the comp it is possible to sail back to the top of the course!
should see off any confusion.
Thanks Gesty. True about the fishing boat or swimmer. Have not seen either at either of the 2 events, but have during other trips I have made to Burrum.
I know the event is for 3 days, but as it is the weekend before Easter and the school holidays, I cant be there for the whole event, and possibly will only make one day ...2 if i am lucky. Downfall of having 10 weeks holiday a year.
Look forward to the map so if I can get there and don't get the oppertunity to compete, i can keep out of the official 'course'.
Cheers,

Hi All!
I'm really interested in coming along this year as I've heard brilliant things from the guys at Wello about the event and location.
I'd say I'll just be coming up for the weekend and I'm looking to just sleep in the car or throw a tent up.
Rolly

If anyone still needs somewhere to stay, I've booked a house right across the road from Burrum Sands from Wednesday to Monday, and have some spare rooms, PM me if your interested : )
Just out of curiosity.....
The junior division, is that the same age as bayside and windsurfing qld age requirements?
bayside sailboards, "Youth – open to youths 19 yrs and under at 1 Jan 2009" (this is obviously last yr's quote therefore 2009 would be 2010)
If so, its on luke.... isonic for isonic
i'm open to debate on the term youth.
i'm not sure what baysides interpretation is but i can say that the idea of youth in my mind is 18 years old and younger.
so a youth should be under the age of 19. ie. not have had their 19th birthday on or before the 31st of dec 2009.
is jo a youth?, i think you guys also need to watch out for Jo
so what's the thoughts.
